Amigos:

El fin de semana , participé en una reunión de la junta directiva de la
Federación Nacional de Ciegos . La reunión se llevó a cabo en nuestra sede
nacional en Baltimore .

Como saben , el Doctor Marc Maurer ha sido nuestro presidente nacional desde
1986.

Se ha desempeñado como presidente por más largo tiempo que cualquiera de
nuestros anteriores presidentes, y nos ha Guiado a través de un periodo de
crecimiento y cambios sin precedentes . Fue bajo El liderazgo del Doctor
Maurer que establecimos el Instituto Jernigan, y todos los programas que han
tenido tanto éxito en la demostración de la verdad de nuestra afirmación de
que, dada la oportunidad y el entrenamiento adecuado, la gente ciega puede
vivir y trabajar como los demás.

En particular, hemos desarrollado muchos programas diseñados para
proporcionar a los niños y jóvenes ciegos con las habilidades y la confianza
que necesitan para competir plenamente en su educación y para el desarrollo
de sus ambiciones en la vida.

Hemos realizado las Competencias de la Juventud, la Academia de Ciencias, y

Alfabetización en Braille, BELL.

En el área de tecnología bajo el liderazgo del Doctorr Maurer, hemos
desarrollado el lector móvil de la Federación, KNFB Reader Mobile, que
permite a las personas ciegas tener acceso inmediato a la inprenta con nada
más que un teléfono móvil y un software especial. Y luego hubo El Desafío
del Conductor Ciego . The Blind Driver Challenge.  No cabe duda de que la
falta de acceso al transporte confiable sigue siendo un obstáculo importante
para las personas ciegas.  Sin embargo , El Desafío del Conductor Ciego
mostró que podíamos desarrollar la tecnología para permitir que una persona
ciega condujera un coche, y no simplemente sentarse pasivamente en un coche
que se conduce solo.

Estas son las expresiones de liderazgo del Doctor Maurer.  Sin embargo, al
centro de su liderazgo, es su espíritu y su fé en todas las personas ciegas.
Nos ha inspirado y alentado , ante los retos más difíciles con resolución y

vencidos en nuestra creencia en nuestro propio derecho a vivir una vida
normal y productiva.



El sábado por la tarde, el Doctor Maurer dijo a la junta directiva, que es
su intención no buscar la reelección a la presidencia el próximo verano en
nuestra convención nacional. Siente que es el momento adecuado para la
transición al siguiente presidente, la siguiente persona que nos puede
llevar a un cuarto de siglo o más.  El Doctor Maurer se encuentra en buen
estado de salud , y considera que es importante renunciar a la presidencia
mientras que todavía puede asistir con la transición.  El Doctor Maurer dijo
a la junta directiva que él, el Doctor  Maurer, planea apoyar al señor
Mark Riccobono como el próximo presidente de la Federación Nacional de
Ciegos. El señor Riccobono actualmente se desempeña como Director Ejecutivo
del Instituto Jernigan.
Él es un individuo consumado con la fortaleza y la sabiduría para asumir la
grave responsabilidad de dirigir a nuestro movimiento. Ha traído a su labor
la imaginación y competencia que exigimos de nuestro presidente.



Somos realmente afortunados de que en la Federación tenemos individuos que
son capaces y están dispuestos a dar todo lo que tienen para ir más lejos en
nuestro movimiento hacia la verdadera igualdad. Las exigencias de la
presidencia de la Federación son inimaginables. Requerimos que nuestro líder
dé todo su tiempo, toda su
imaginación , y todo de su reserva personal de juicio al liderar nuestra
organización. Esto es lo que el Doctor Maurer ha hecho durante los últimos
27 años y medio, y es lo que Mark Riccobono va a hacer en el momento de su
presidencia.

La transición pone fin a un capítulo de nuestra historia, y que capítulo tan
glorioso ha sido.



No podemos hacer frente a la pérdida del liderazgo del Doctor Maurer sin una
sensación de tristeza ; pero la transición a un nuevo presidente no es sólo
la ausencia de lo que teníamos antes . La transición anuncia un nuevo
capítulo de nuestra historia, y con ella, las nuevas oportunidades, y la
oportunidad de tomar todo lo que ha venido antes y crear algo más grande y
más potente de lo que han conocido.



Por favor, únanse a mí para agradecer al Doctor Maurer por su liderazgo, su
amistad y su fiel devoción a la causa; y por favor, únanse a mí para
desearle a Mark Riccobono lo mejor en su intento de tomar el simiento, que
es todo lo que ha venido antes, y construir sobre ello el próximo gran
capítulo de nuestra historia .
