                  WE HAVE A POPE!

It's been quite a month. We had the great feasts of St. Patrick and St. Joseph, and not only has the College of Cardinals made their excellent choice, our new Holy Father is also a Jesuit! We note with particular pleasure that he was ordained a priest on December 13th, the feast of St. Luc, patron saint of the blind. In his first audiences and interviews he has stressed the need to reach out to those most in need, to open ourselves up to new ways of following Christ - and that is exactly what we have been doing over the last months.

For instance, we continue to increase our volunteer group who are recording at home, and there is always room for more. Some have digital recording devices, some are recording on their computers, and you can be of great service without leaving home. We ask for a short demo, so we can judge both your voice and the quality of your recording, and once those both are accepted, we start sending you material, either by mail or via the internet.

We are also working with other groups to increase both our braille production and the ways in which we can reach out with our braille library and services. We are also in talks with two other groups about ways in which we can coordinate with their programs to expand our reach. We'll share that information as soon as plans become definite.

Of course, we are continuing our 113-year old policy of not charging for our services, and so we also continue to depend on friends and supporters to help make that possible.
                  LARGE-PRINT GIVE-AWAY
Letters have been sent to all large-print clients, with the details of how the large-print library will be distributed. We are essentially giving away the contents, but only registered clients are eligible.

Anyone who IS a large-print client who has not received this letter, please call or email us, and we will be sure that one goes out to you immediately. A copy of the letter is also posted on the website in the client section.

                  CALENDAR NEWS

The calendar for sighted friends has been mailed. If you have not received one and would like a calendar, send us an email or make aphone call and we will send it out to you. We apologize for the delay.

                  A REMINDER

                  New Policy
We are pleased to announce that in the future, when clients ask for a braille book from our library, they will no longer be required to return the book. They can return books if they wish to, but they are also free to keep the books and simply return the mailing box.

Many people prefer to build their own libraries, and we are pleased to be able to help them do that.

                  FRIENDS OF THE XAVIER SOCIETY
We love it when we get to connect with our past, and shortly after we sent out our calendars, we got an email from Joanne Brogan, the great grand-niece of Fr. Stadelmann, the Jesuit who helped to found the Xavier Society. One of the pictures in the calendar was one she did not have, so we sent it along. Fr. John had met her a couple of years ago at a Fleet Week event (her husband volunteers on the Intrepid) and not only was Fr. Stadelmann a relative, his niece, Louise Paetschler, worked for XSB as a typist early on. Joanne had
two other Jesuits in her family as well, Fr. Bill Lynch from Fordham and Fr. Cornelius Gillespie from St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia. Fr. John shared a picture they had taken that day.
                  IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

In his first general audience with the press, Pope Francis met with Alessandro Forlani, a blind radiojournalist, and gave a blessing to his seeing eye dog.

Vatican watchers note that this was yet another break with tradition and custom.
                  CLOSING THOUGHTS

As I announced in the last edition of this Newsletter, we have sold our building. We are still looking for our new home, but we have started to prepare for the move. As we go through files and records and furniture, deciding what will go with us and what will be sold or given away, we are struck by how many people have been involved in this work over the years in so many different ways.

A group of dedicated women started this organization with the help of Fr. Stadelmann, and Jesuits have been a part of this work ever since. Volunteers have made possible much of what we do, and that continues to the present day as well. Wherever we move, whatever we look like, whatever new services we are able to provide, I am convinced that our volunteers will continue to be a crucial part of that.

I have often said that there are three ways to volunteer: by providing direct services, and now that can be done both in the office and at home; by making financial contributions to help our work; and always, by praying for us and the people we serve.

Thank you for your help, your support, your contributions and your prayers. March has been and is an exciting month, and we expect that the months to come will be just an exciting. For whatever you can do to help sustain that excitement and our service, all of us say Thank You.

                  Gratefully,
