Estimados líderes de la Federación:

Ayer, un anuncio se circuló en las listas de la Federación, proveniente de Tiffany Jolliff, coordinadora de investigación en las Industrias para Ciegos, National Industries for the Blind (NIB). Este anuncio
señala que las Industrias para Ciegos, "National Industries for the Blind, NIB, está enfocada en su misión de crear y mantener oportunidades de empleo para las personas ciegas o con discapacidad visual", y que la investigadora
está "interesada en la realización de grupos focales con personas entre las edades de 45 y 64 que son ciegos" en nuestra convención nacional. Es importante tener en cuenta
que la circulación de la presente solicitud de participación en la convención no tiene aprobación de esta actividad. 

Líderes de la Federación deben recordar que las Industrias para Ciegos, National Industries for the Blind, NIB, todavía permite a sus agencias asociadas el pagar un salario inferior al salario mínimo  a sus empleados ciegos.  Esto está en directo
conflicto con la política establecida por nuestra convención de que se pide la eliminación de la 14(c) de la Ley de Normas Justas Laborales, Fair Labor Standards Act. La Federación ha rechazado recientes
ofertas de las Industrias para Ciegos, NIB, de ser un patrocinador de la convención nacional y hemos dicho que no vamos a reconsiderar ninguna oferta de patrocinio hasta que las Industrias para Ciegos, National Industries for the Blind, NIB, cambie su
propia política, de la 14(c).  

Nuestros esfuerzos de abogacía para mejorar los salarios que se pagan a los trabajadores contratados bajo las Industrias para Ciegos, NIB, se ha traducido en una mejora significativa para la mayoría, pero no para todos. No tenemos interés en hacer algo para "crear y mantener oportunidades que permitan avanzar el empleo asalariado por debajo del salario mínimo. Para ello, animo a todos los Federacionistas el tener esto en cuenta al considerar el mensaje que ha circulado por desgracia, a través de nuestras listas de correo.

Subject: Response to Focus Group Request from NIB for NFB Convention

Dear Federation Leaders:

Yesterday, an announcement was circulated to NFB lists from Tiffany Jolliff, research coordinator at National Industries for the Blind (NIB). This announcement notes that "NIB is focused on its mission to create and sustain employment opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired," and that the researcher is "interested in conducting focus groups with people between the ages of 45 and 64 who are blind" at our national convention. It is important to note that the circulation of this request for participation in our convention is not an endorsement of this activity. 

Federation leaders should remember that NIB still allows their associated agencies to pay subminimum wages to their blind employees.  This is in direct conflict with the policy set by our convention that calls for the elimination of 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The Federation has declined recent offers from NIB to be a sponsor of the national convention and we have said that we will not reconsider any offers of sponsorship until NIB changes its own policy on 14 (c).  

Our advocacy efforts to improve the wages being paid to those employed under NIB contracts has resulted in significant improvement for most, but not all.  We have no interest in doing anything to "create and sustain opportunities" that advance subminimum wage employment. To that end, I encourage all Federationists to keep this in mind when considering the message that has unfortunately circulated throughout our listservs.
