> The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced this week that they will move forward with a notice of appeal to the U.S. District Court for the District Columbia with regard to its efforts to mandate minimum wage and overtime protections for in-home caregivers. The pay protections were scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2015, but U.S. District Judge Richard Leon issued an order staying implementation of the effective date of the regulations, which narrow the definition of “companionship services” and exclude third party employers from the companionship exemption. > This week, the Senate released a bicameral, bipartisan Medicaid reform bill, called the Advancing Care for Exceptional (ACE) Kids Act. The bill, sponsored by Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), will now be referred through the Finance Committee. The ACE Act is meant to coordinate care to ensure optimal outcomes for children with complex medical conditions in Medicaid. > Indiana to Begin Medicaid Expansion
> On Tuesday, the federal government and the state of Indiana announced that they had reached a deal to expand Medicaid services in Indiana. Indiana will now begin to implement a state-run program, HIP 2.0, that will expand health coverage to 350,000 uninsured residents. > The University of Georgia (UGA) announced this week that it is looking at new ways to make their campus accessible to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Jim Thompson, Vice President of the Student Government Association, and other student representatives are working in tandem with researchers at UGA’s J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development to determine how to best set up an academic and residential program to prepare those with individuals with I/DD for employment and independent living after high school.
