[NFBF-L] Legislative Alert!!!: Florida Senate Bill 1050-Consolidation of All Disabilities Into One Agency

Greetings Florida: 

 

We have breaking news from Tallahassee and it will take all of us working
together to combat. Senate Bill 1050 was introduced this afternoon in the
state legislature. This is a concerted effort to consolidate all disability
agencies into one general disabilities service agency. The National
Federation of the Blind of Florida is adamantly opposed to such
consolidation. Passage of this legislation will have a diminishing effect on
the services we receive through Division of Blind Services and Vocational
Rehabilitation. We will discuss some strategies related to our opposition at
the Legislative Committee meeting tomorrow night at 8 p.m. Please join us. 

 

I have attached to this email the pdf document containing the bill text. It
is long and I don't expect everyone to have read this prior to the meeting,
but please keep it so you can review at your leisure. I have also attached
the resolution passed at our 2024 State Convention, declaring our opposition
to any plans for consolidation. As a reminder, resolutions passed by the
convention body are policy statements of the National Federation of the
Blind of Florida. This is our organizational position on the issue at hand. 

 

I encourage our members to come and be part of advocating for ourselves. I
heard a quote tonight that I have not heard in a very long time. I don't
have the attribution and am completely para-phrasing: 

 

Our downfall will not be the evil men do, but those who stand by and do
nothing.
