This may fall under the umbrella of special circumstances. For awhile
David was given to understand that he couldn't take his cane with him on
Shabbat, but then it was recognized that he wasn't carrying it, so much as it was
guiding him, and he wouldn't get there otherwise. The same may apply to
wheelchairs, though the Eruv may take care of that.
