"THE FABULOUS ASTEROIDS" TO GIVE FREE PERFORMANCE AT APH

Dance band from the 50s and 60s will perform on June 4



Louisville, KY (May 10, 2011) - The Museum of the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) will host a free performance by "The Fabulous Asteroids" on Saturday, June 4th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The dance band was formed at the Kentucky School for the Blind and had quite a reputation back in the late fifties and early sixties. While they were still in high school, Noah Carver, Pat Mayerchak, B.T. Kimbrough, and Gary Jones played talent shows and school events, showcasing their own music, plus rockabillty, rock n'roll, and rhythm and blues covers of artists such as Wanda Jackson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Buddy Holly. 

This event, as part of APH's "Bards and Storytellers" annual arts, folklore, and performance series, celebrates the historical traditions of entertainers with vision loss. As part of the program, Doug Boyd, Director of the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky, will engage in a discussion with the performers, so that the audience will not only have a chance to enjoy these talented performers, but will learn something about the personal events and forces that have shaped their careers.

ABOUT "BARDS AND STORYTELLERS":

"Bards and Storytellers" is an ongoing series of presentations by entertainers who are blind. Historically, being an entertainer was one of the few routes to independence for a visually impaired person. This series presents contemporary performers who have chosen to follow this path, even though, today, because of better educational opportunities and a shifting of societal attitudes, their employment possibilities are considerably greater.
