Sometimes I look in wonder at my computer and marvel at all the things it can do; and sometimes I look in disgust at my computer and am frustrated because it didn't do the one thing I wanted it to do.  Pamela Roark-Glisson, President of the NFB of Lexington, emailed the chapter report to me for publication in the Summer 2011 edition of the Cardinal, but somewhere between her computer and mine a small, green, cyberspace gismo malfunctioned and I didn't receive the article.  I would like to apologize to Pamela and the Lexington Chapter.  Please read the following article to find out what has been happening in Lexington.

NFB of Lexington

August 2011

Fello Federationists!  So many good things are happening on behalf of our ‘Nation’s Blind’, according to the NFB presidential annual report that it is difficult to focus on events and activities of one small Chapter here in the heart of the Bluegrass.  Nfblex.org, NFB of Lexington’s new Web Site will help display the Chapter’s activities.  The NFB of Lexington Chapter has experienced new growth in membership and volunteerism.  A young teacher at the Lexington Catholic High School, has volunteered to develop and maintain NFB of Lexington’s Web Site.  The chapter’s membership is showing impressive growth in outstanding ability and community status.  One of the relatively new members is a Social Worker who provides counseling in the ‘psycho social’ division of the Lexington VAMC.  Another member is a blind photographer and operates her small business online.

The Chapter had its first bulk mailing in June 2011 to raise awareness and reach out to potential community partners.  The expertise of one member was applied to develop the database and other members provided a fantastic beginning of all optometrists and ophthalmologists in the area, along with other resources.

The first cash drawing of the new membership thrust occurred in June, 2011 for membership recruiting efforts, and the 1st place prize was $200 and 2nd place $100.  The winners contributed the winnings back to the Chapter!  Many thanks for your support!!  NFB of Lexington is ‘changing what it means to be blind’ in Central Kentucky.

Pamela Roark-Glisson, President, Todd Stephens, Vice President, John Glisson, Secretary and Bobby Begley, At Large Member, had the opportunity to join the Kentucky Delegation to the Annual NFB National Convention in Orlando, Florida at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort!  The conventioneers reported a magnificent time and lots of fun working the ‘NFBK Keychain Booth’ in the Exhibit Hall, working the NFB-NEWSLINE® Training Room and lots lots more.  The crew returned energized and prepared to continue the mission of the NFB.  Of course, NFB of Lexington plays a major role each year in the planning and organizing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) annual statewide Rally held in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort.  NFB of Lexington members were proud to find President Cathy Jackson at the podium again this year.  The Mistress of Ceremonies, Pamela Roark-Glisson, was pleased to welcome Bill Simpson, the president of the Kentuckiana Regional
Group of the Blinded Veteran’s Association to the podium as well.  Other NFBK esteemed members such as Mr. George Stokes, Frankfort, Mike Freholm, Ashland, along with Danny Perry, Aneta Perry, Jackie Kimbro, Brenda Kimbro and Barbara Monts from the Murray chapter were in attendance.

President Glisson, Vice President Stephens and Secretary John Glisson also joined the ‘Picket Line’ on the corner of 6th and Chestnut in front of the Mazoli Building in Louisville to close the busy month of July 2011 with the resounding emphatic and effective “NO” to Section 511 of the Workforce Investment Act scheduled reauthorization.  When such actions result in legislative postponement, NFB has been successful!  NFB of Lexington always stands ready to join the “March to Independence” whether it’s following, leading or in any other capacity that makes a difference for the blind of Kentucky and of the Nation.

The Chapter is looking forward to the September walk-a-thon which is proving to be a great awareness raiser and fundraiser.  October “Meet the Blind Month” unique activities are already being considered and plans drafted.  The Chapter will participate in the October 15 White Cane Safety Day events and other activities which will take the Chapter on through the Holiday Season spreading cheer, consuming lots of great food and demonstrating to the community that blindness is not the end of one’s life, but can be a bright new beginning.

It's a lot more satisfying to reach for the stars, even if you end up landing only on the moon.
