Delegate Eric Bromwell

Room 415, Lowe House Office Building

Annapolis, MD 21401

Dear Delegate Bromwell:

Please support HB 183 and HB 287 in order to help me and all the other blind citizens of Maryland. (BTW, my friend is helping me type this letter as I dictate.)

HB 183

State Government - Human Relations - Discrimination in Housing, Employment, and Places of Public Accommodation. (Title 20, Civil Rights Commission)

I use the Internet to shop and look up all kinds of things. I can't shop some online stores because their websites have unlabeled buttons or otherwise do not work for screen access software that blind persons like me use. It is not hard to make a website useful for us if the store programmers would just fix the system at the start.

These online websites need to be accessible. They are places of Public Accommodation but in a manner of speaking I can't get in.

HB 287

Civil Rights - Discrimination by a Place of Public Accommodation - Enforcement and Remedies. (Title 20, Civil Rights Commission)

The civil rights laws in Maryland are nearly worthless to me unless I have a way to get the police and the courts to enforce the laws. I am not rich Rockefeller so I need help to convince places that serve the general public to serve me EQUALLY. I feel very strongly about this. There are many times I could tell you about that are just plain wrong, but I was too small potatoes to get my rights and could not get the police to understand the situation either. Please vote for this bill.

Yours truly,

Ken Chrane
