Hi Chris,

The NFB’s research advisory council and the requirement for pre-approval of research studies before our members can be solicited for participation is relatively new, and word is still getting out. I encourage anyone interested in learning more about our research advisory council, research mission, and research priorities to visit https://nfb.org/research.

Best regards,

Lou Ann

Hi Lou Ann:

Thank you for this information. I admittedly didn't know that we now have a council which focuses on this issue. Perhaps I've gotten out of touch in my time at college and I need to get back in the loop!

For any of us who are unfamiliar with the work of the Research Advisory Council, could you tell us a little more about the "research priorities of the NFB?" It appears that this particular study has been approved by UMBC's Institutional Review Board (IRB), as an IRB approval number is listed in the advertising material. But I'm wondering what our research priorities are and how we can determine whether outside studies match them in the event that we receive research solicitations directly, as has happened to me from time to time?

Thanks,
Chris Nusbaum

Dear List Members,

Any solicitations to members of the National Federation of the Blind to participate in research studies need to be approved by the Jernigan Institute research advisory council (RAC) prior to posting. Anyone who receives a request to post a research announcement should forward that request to me. Our RAC will review the research to ensure that it fits within the research priorities of the NFB and that it has been reviewed and approved by an organizational internal review board. Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Best regards,

Lou Ann

Happy Wednesday!

Below, I have pasted information about a research study being
conducted at UMBC. Please read the description and contact the people
below for more information.

Best,
Melissa Lomax

Study Introduction:

Our collaborative research study team (at University of California
Irvine and University of Maryland Baltimore County) is seeking
participants for the study examining experiences of indoor navigation
among individuals with disabilities or aged over 60 (UMBC IRB -
Y19RK12016). We are seeking to interview individuals who identify
with both visual and physical disabilities to identify their
experiences when navigating or planning routes. The findings would
help us better understand ways in which navigational technologies
could be better designed to match the needs of a wider selection of
users. The interviews would last 60 to 90 minutes, conducted over
phone or Skype. A small giftcard is also available for your
participation. If you would be interested in participating, could you
please contact Dr. Ravi Kuber at (rkuber at umbc.edu<mailto:rkuber at umbc.edu>) or Ali Abdolrahmani
(aliab1 at umbc.edu<mailto:aliab1 at umbc.edu>).
