Michigan Commission for the Blind to Present Annual Statewide Awards December 10

December 1, 2010 -The Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB) will present its annual Achievement Honor Roll Awards at the MCB Commission Board meeting
on Friday, December 10, at approximately 10:30 a.m.

MCB will hold meetings of the commission board on Thursday, December 9, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and on Friday, December 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 
Both meetings will be held in Lansing in the Victor Building, 201 N. Washington Square (at Ottawa) 3rd floor, Conference Room A/B.  Both meetings are open
to the public.

The MCB Achievement Honor Roll Awards are presented annually to MCB clients who are exemplary in achieving their goals for employment and/or independent
living after vision loss, employers who have shown leadership in hiring people who are blind or visually impaired based on their abilities, and community
partners recognized for their collaboration with MCB in increasing opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve independence
and/or employment.  These are the 2010 award recipients:

MCB Clients (individuals who are blind or visually impaired):

Ruthann Bryer (67), Oshtemo, lives independently and is learning computer skills and Swedish weaving.

William R. Jones (60), Bellaire, is the owner and operator of Jones Pest Control.

Priscilla Miley (43), Detroit, is a vocational rehabilitation teacher with Visually Handicapped Services.

Frances Rea (92), Dearborn, maintains her own home and enjoys gardening and visiting neighbors.

Steve Scott (40), Portage, is the owner/operator of Something For All Seasons lawn & outdoor equipment sales and repair.

Jeff Smith (46), Owosso and Alpharetta, GA, is a tax examiner with the IRS.

Employer:

Shore to Shore Community Federal Credit Union, Grosse Ile; Jon Looman, CEO.

Community Partners:

Dr. Bernard Miller (63), Detroit, is Director of Clinical Affairs, Optometric Institute and Clinic of Detroit.

Jane Robertson (65), Brimley, has purchased and donated adaptive equipment to MCB clients who need this equipment to live independently.

Photos and additional information about the award recipients will be sent in a news release December 13.
