Would that be Dorothy Eagle? I remember her from being at Echo Grove
(back when it was a good camp) in 1975.

Subject: [nfbmi-talk] Happy Thanksgiving--A time to Reflect

Dear NFB Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

As I reflect on how blessed I am to be an American, with all the
freedoms and responsibilities that being American bestow upon us, I
cannot help being thankful for being part of the second of four
generations of NFB family members.

My parents, active in organizing the NFB in Michigan in the 40s, 50s,
and beyond, imparted to me and my four siblings the philosophy of Dr.
Tenbrook and Dr. Jernigan that brought rise and massive to the largest
movement across the nation and around the world, of the blind speaking
for ourselves and future generations of blind children and adults. It
is the philosphy and every person that embraces and lives out the
philosophy that makes the NFB the oldest, largest, gtratest, and
neccessarily the only forthright and boldest organization of the blind,
educating sighted and blind alike, that given the correct philosophy and
attitude of "can do", blindness can be reduced to an inconvenience, and
an opportunity to be the independent indiviual we are created and
intended to be, and do anything we choose to do freely and
independently, if we follow the NFB philosophy and follow the American
dream. I am so thankful to have bee born into an NFB family that
embraced, lived, and taught the NFB philosophy. Still, at nearly age
91, my mother practices the fiercely independent lifestyle that has been
passed down from generation to generation, like a favorite family
recipe; a recipe for a lifetime of successful personal exploration and
independent living.

In addition, I am very thankful for the skills and abilities I possess
and volunteer to the movement. Were it not for the NFB philosophy for
life, I am certain I would not possess and use those skills and
abilities to advance the NFB movement. And while admittedly at times
the challenges (usually resulting from ignorance and prejudice)appear
overwhelming, it is in continuing to give, combined with a good night's
rest and prayers answered, that the path is cleared of obstacles to
fulfillment.

All the tuition paid and federal student loans available could not
produce for me the opportunities to learn, develop and put to use
skills and abilities, and gain real-life experience, that volunteering
one's skills and abilities to a most worthy cause--advancing the NFB
philosphy and lifestyle. And seldom does a day pass that my sill and
ability to listen to others and seek out their ideas, that I learn more.
I say all this to encourage all to seriously evaluate your skills and
abilities, give thanks for those unique skills and abilities, and donate
time to the NFB through volunteering your skills and abilities. Human
resources are our greatest resource in advancing the NFB mission.

Have a wonderful, happy, and safe holiday season everyone!

Terry Eagle
