  _____

A Gold Standard for Teacher Education

  _____

Woodrow Wilson Fellows participate in a transformative pre-service Master's
year while spending intensive hours in classrooms, learning to teach by
watching and doing while gaining the foundational knowledge so critical in
impacting student outcomes from day one.

Fellows also become part of a much larger aspiration.

Working with their university program and the Foundation, they are impacting
change in teacher education programs across the nation, answering the
question, "What might an excellent teacher preparation program look like and
how can we lead the way to creating the gold standard of teacher education
within universities?"

AACTE highlighted the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship as one of five
"clinical preparation programs that are emerging as potential models. Based
on the "best research and professional judgment ", the programs are
"innovative and inspiring", and hold "great promise for success."

  _____

What to Expect

  _____

Candidates complete one application that allows them to apply to both the
Fellowship program and the university at the same time.

Each program is unique and has been selected by the Foundation for its
potential to create a model of teacher education excellence for the future
and to base itself on a framework of best practices strongly endorsed by
research and the Foundation.

Fellows can expect rigorous training, ongoing professional development, and
some common components across all Woodrow Wilson university programs:

*A full-time, pre-service year of Master's coursework starting in May or
June of 2012 and lasting through the summer of 2013

*Teacher certification obtained at the end of summer 2013

*A master's study year divided equally between coursework and demanding
immersive "clinical" experiences in schools, observing and working in urban
or rural schools three to five days per week

*A focus on students in high-poverty urban or rural schools

*Courses and programs designed uniquely for and geared toward the cohort of
Fellows on each campus

*Upon starting a three-year commitment as salaried teachers working for
school districts, Fellows also receive three years of mentoring from veteran
teachers

*All Fellows receive a $30,000 stipend to help offset the cost of the
full-time pre-service Master's year

*Many university partners offer additional financial aid incentives, tuition
reductions, and scholarships to Fellows
