Michigan agency pushes for awareness of nursing home abuse cases | MLive.com

The Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service is advocating for more oversight of nursing homes in Michigan.

The

agency,

which protects the legal rights of people with disabilities, reported one patient at an Oakland County facility had maggots in her trachea and a patient

in Washtenaw County had maggots on an open leg sore.

“The cases used in this report are examples and unfortunately they are not isolated incidents or unique to any particular nursing home. Rather, they are

indicative of a statewide failure to provide quality nursing care at all times and protect nursing facility residents from harm – without exception,” the

report states.

The report, released in November, aims to draw attention toward correcting abusive and neglectful conditions and does not intend to say all nursing home

facilities provide poor care.

“Undeniably, there are thousands of nursing home residents who receive the care they need and deserve. (Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service), however,

views even one case of abuse and neglect as too many and cannot be tolerated,” the report stated.

The agency’s report cited examples of neglect and abuse in nursing homes in recent years, including cases in Midland and Saginaw counties. The report did

not name the nursing homes.

In October 2010, a Midland resident got a skull fracture from a fall from wheelchair and died three days later because of bleeding in the brain. Another

incident in February 2010 resulted in another patient dying from injuries sustained in a fall from a wheelchair without foot pedals, and no staff members

were disciplined.

In Saginaw County in December 2009, a resident was able to leave a nursing home facility and sat in a wheelchair on the side of the road. No staff members

were disciplined.
