Ann, just press the home button on your phone and the app will close unless 
it's an audio app in which case there may be a stop button on the screen. 
Also, for more information about the iphone, think about getting the book 
Getting started with the Iphone, by Anna Dresner and Dean Martineaux, 
available in several formats from National Braille Press http://www.nbp.org
