Nearly 100 adults will benefit from job training and educational opportunities in mid-Michigan through a federal grant awarded to a Lansing-based non-profit.

Peckham, Inc., a

community vocational rehabilitation organization,

announced Thursday that is received a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor; the funds are to be used to provide training, education and

support services to young adults transitioning out of the juvenile justice system.

"This grant is a wonderful complement to the adjudicated youth programs Peckham already provides," said Greta Wu, Senior Vice President of Human Services.

"We believe in the potential of these young people, and this grant allows us an expanded opportunity for training, education and job preparation to help

young adults rehabilitate and reach their goals of success and self-sufficiency."

Peckham officials said the funds will be used to serve individuals ages 18-21 who were involved ion the juvenile justice system.

Through training projects, service learning opportunities and educational components, participants will earn high school diplomas and industry recognized

credentials.

Four staff positions will be added to serve the nearly 100 youth the program is expected to reach over its two-year duration.

Officials expect the program to begin in the fall of 2012.

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded 25 community-based organizations $50 million in grants for the project.

The grants were awarded through a competitive process, open to national and regional organizations with experience operating multi-site projects and serving

young adult offenders.
