Hi all,

Having a bit of trouble with my email. This game is available from the NFB independence Market Shut the Box- for $9. I believe. Here are the directions. Georgia

math game

Made from wood, for 2 or more players, Game consists of two dice, number on both side of each wood tile

For Ages 3 and up

This is a simple but compelling MATH game for virtually any number of players

It is frequently played for small stakes in pubs and bars, where a set is often kept by the landlord for the entertainment of the customers. This set consists of a felt lined tray with 9 pivoting wooden tiles each numbered individually on both sides. When the blocks are lying parallel to the tray they are "open"; when the are tilted back against the end of the tray, they are "closed" or "shut". The object is to"shut" the numbers by throwing the two dice into the tray and using the score to flip over tiles to the same total value. All the dice score must be used exactly, but it is the players choice as to which combinations of tiles is flipped over.

Examples:

The following is a table

Dice total Tiles flipped

2 no. 2

3 either no. 3 or no. 1 and no. 2

4 either no. 4 or no. 1 and no. 3

5 either no. 5 or nos. 1 and 4 or nos. 2 and 3

6 Either no. 6 or nos. 1 and 5 or nos. 2 and 4 or nos. 1, 2 and 3.

Both dice are always thrown.

When it is impossible to match the dice throw with any combination of tiles, the turn ends and the remaining open tiles are scored against the player. This can be done in 2 ways:

1. By scoring the numbers read from left to right.

2. By scoring the total value of the tiles which remain open.

Examples:

If the remaining open tiles are numbers 2, 3, and 4, a dice thrown of 8 cannot be used and the tiles will be scored against the player. The score will then be written as 2, 3, and 4 equals 234 or 2 plus 3 plus 4 equals 9.

Play passes to the next player and continues until each player has taken an agreed number of turns, the winner being the player with the lowest score at the end. However, a player who flips over all nine tiles during his or her turn "shut the box" and wins immediately whatever the scores are at the time.

This game can be played in different ways. Search online for "Shut the Box" to find out or invent your own rules. The game contains small pieces so it is not recommended for children under 3 years old. Enjoy the game!

 Hi All,

This game, Shut the Box is available from the NFB Independence Market, call 410-659-9314 or order online at

nfb.org

Last time I checked the game was $9. I don't know what kind of wood it is made of. It is not walnut though. It seems nice and does have braille instructions with it and print ones also. It is also labeled in Braille and print.

I play it with children mostly.
