[nfbmi-talk] wood carving show happening in East Lansing

Hello Larry and All,

I think this is an interesting opportunity. However, I do not agree with the
notion that the entrance fee is waved for those who are blind plus one
companion. I think this sets us up for the dangerous notion that we as
blind people cannot be treated as equals, nor can we independently navigate
an exhibit such as this one. Therefore, I do not see how we can promote such
an event that promotes such low expectations for the blind. Has anyone from
our organization tried to reach out and educate these people regarding the
capabilities of the blind? if not, then what exactly are we doing as an
organization? Just some thoughts to think about.

Warm regards,
Elizabeth

> Dear Mr. Posont,
>
> Recently we spoke about the Greater Lansing Woodcarver's show. The show
> will have a section dedicated to the visually impaired where guests can
> touch, feel, handle and pick up the carvings. We, the woodcarvers,
> believe dedicating a portion of the show for the visually impaired is
> quite unique and we want as many as possible to participate. We are
> excited that your organization will be able to assist us in alerting
> others to this show. The show will be held on April 19th in the Haslett
> High School gymnasium from 10am to 4pm. Admission for visually impaired
> people and one companion for each has been waived. The cost for others
> is $3.00. In our phone conversation you said to send you some sort of
> announcement about the show and one is attached. I have also attached
