[nfbmi-talk] Parental Rights For The Blind

Greetings, everybody.

As many of you probably know, Parnell Diggs has stepped aside from his
governmental affairs role at National Office to accept an appointment
as administrative law judge at the Social Security Administration.

Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette has taken over some of Parnell's portfolio of
responsibilities, and he sent a note to state presidents with some
documentation meant to help us pitch the idea of passing a parental
rights for the blind bill in our respective state legislatures.
Indiana Affiliate President Ron Brown forwarded that note onto all
Indiana Federation mailing list members.

Mr. Hedtler-Gaudette points out that Michigan has a legislature still
in session for 2017 and that a model bill like this one I've attached,
could still serve as the launch pad for getting blind people's right
to parent guaranteed legally in Michigan, as it has been guaranteed
this year in six other states.  Indiana's legislature already is done.
So I cannot act on this meaningfully with my own representative or
state senator until 2018, unless the governor here were to call a
special session.

But in case any of you in Michigan haven't seen this and want to act,
I want to make sure it goes to all interested Federationists in
Michigan or any other state that has a long-running or continuously
running legislative assembly.  As a totally blind dad of three and
foster dad to two others here in Indiana, this certainly is near to my
heart.  So act as you deem appropriate.
