Greetings Friends,

Today is the last day to register for the Pumpkin Patch Party which will be held at the close of Birdability week, October 24-26 at Camp Tuhsmeheta. We would love to have you join us for a focus on bird migration at Harvest time. Thankfully, the owls and woodpeckers will be staying in the woods surrounding Camp Tuhsmeheta for the winter so we can hopefully hear them. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thankfully,

Our Birdability Week logo, an original linocut print by artist Jenny Gringer that says "You Belong Here" is at the top. All info in the photo can be found at https://www.birdability.org/birdability-week.

Birdability Week is right around the corner, and whether you’re a longtime birder, just getting curious, or somewhere in between, this is your invitation to join a global celebration of belonging, access, and bird joy.

Now in its fifth year, Birdability Week brings together disabled birders and allies through virtual sessions, local accessible outings, skill-sharing, and storytelling across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and beyond. It’s a week rooted in disability justice, held with joy, and designed so every body and every mind feels welcome.

Why Birdability Week Matters:

Belonging

When disabled birders are seen, heard, and centered, we all find a deeper sense of connection as we work toward access and inclusion. Birdability Week creates space to reflect a global community where we truly belong.

Access and Action

Access is how we build inclusion into trails, centers, outings, and programs. A dedicated week brings visibility to access barriers and the practical tools, creative solutions, and community leadership that move us forward.

Voice and Visibility

>From keystone panels to live workshops to social media campaigns, Birdability Week raises the profile of disabled birders and affirms access as a shared value in the birding world.

Community Care

Being in community is essential. Birdability Week reminds us that access and connection go hand in hand and that the skills, relationships, and stories we share this week ripple out all year long.

In the Words of Our Community

“Birdability Week matters because it reminds us how important it is to make birding accessible for every body.”

“It creates space for people to see themselves reflected in a global community - helping them find a place where they truly belong.”

“My brain is better on birds because birds spark my creative thinking and problem solving.”

Accessible Birdability Week In-Person Events

Image description: A digital map titled “Birdability Week 2025 Accessible Events” shows the United States, parts of Canada, and northern Mexico. Blue location pins are spread across the map, marking sites of accessible Birdability Week events. Clusters of pins appear in the Northeast around New York, Pennsylvania, and New England; in the Midwest around Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa; and in the Southeast near Georgia and North Carolina. Additional pins mark locations in Texas, Colorado, California, Oregon, and Washington, as well as Vancouver, Canada, and near Montreal. The map is a Google My Maps interface with standard navigation tools.

One of the most joyful parts of Birdability Week is the ever-growing map of accessible birding outings happening all over the country, organized by incredible Birdability Captains, partner organizations, and access-minded bird nerds who believe that birding should be for every body and every mind.

>From Alabama to Minnesota, New Jersey to Arizona, Indiana to Texas, and way beyond, community-led accessible birding events are creating space for joy, belonging, and a deeper connection to nature.

The <https://swn6onfbb.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001wZejzh-kokWVXeXSHABlTZ7oxMsbrj_r6sTZhE_OjhuUXeCcigrDCFGcejCXulTkzB1w-OuKZ3zymfSsJlPsj4g25YrUdULQBDUHFRBbSQOTOPd_1Xj029PzjmitPx4Kfu3XKbsvXDax40clXh8nTnZfnb0gKH1fpt_H2ktGj0RgCgsCpx37FA==&c=_UFVX6mAxpfB1JiLLkKWlzjRtfD0u7RPOSZee7vKdFkT1LpCL36r2g==&ch=4XjxBeRbjpCUACruNmS4FmfZEdCH2Y-6zBQNFsW8cDBZ4146LVsiyg==> Birdability Week Events Map features everything from paved-trail walks and “Big Sit” gatherings to mindful birding outings, low-vision–centered activities, and multigenerational family-friendly bird sits. Each one is unique and reflects the creativity and care of its organizers and the community it serves.

Too often, people with disabilities, health concerns, or access needs are excluded from outdoor spaces, not because they don’t want to participate, but because the spaces weren’t built with them in mind. These outings flip that script to celebrate access and inclusion and remind all birders that YOU BELONG HERE.

A few highlights:

* Alabama Audubon is hosting a gentle-paced walk through Birmingham’s Avondale Park with tactile bird ID and loaner binoculars.

* Land of Lakes Bird Alliance in Minnesota is creating a welcoming space for birders with mobility disabilities on a beautiful flat paved trail - benches, curb cuts, and all.

* NJ Audubon and The Nature Conservancy are co-leading a mindful birding experience with ASL interpretation and rest areas along the route.

* Tucson's Fort Lowell Park will host a relaxed desert stroll through an ADA-accessible park with shaded rest spots and birding by ear emphasis.

* Indy Parks and Outdoor Afro-Indianapolis and Conner Prairie Museum in Indiana are inviting folks to a Big Sit (no hiking needed!) with options for short trail meanders- two different events in the same area with access and inclusion at their core.

* Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Pennsylvania is offering an accessible Hawk Watch experience where participants can witness fall raptor migration from an ADA-accessible viewing platform.

* In Rhode Island, a Birdability Captain is leading an outing that uses a Gator, a type of small tractor, to help navigate spaces at a Land Trust that may otherwise have been inaccessible to folks with mobility challenges.

* In Colorado, a local team is hosting a bird sit and adaptive equipment demo in a beautiful park with wide, smooth trails and seating areas -creating community for birders of all mobilities, as well as an outing specifically for veterans.

* In Massachusetts, an accessible bird banding demonstration offers participants a chance to safely observe up-close science in action, with flat terrain and sensory-friendly considerations.

* And in California, we have several events, including a bilingual birding outing (English/Spanish) in San Diego, CA, that connects diverse communities through shared wonder at the birds around us, all in a park served by public transportation with accessible bathrooms nearby, and an outing to photograph Sandhill Cranes at Cosumnes River Preserve in Sacramento.

Image Description: A side-by-side image of two outdoor informational signs from the Really Small Museum at The Point. On the left, a square black and white sign reads “Texas Song Bird Song” in both raised lettering and Braille. A red QR code and a circular NFC symbol invite users to “Listen” by scanning or tapping with a phone. A bright red cardinal illustration perches on the edge of the sign. The sign is mounted on a post in front of a wooden bench.

On the right, a second sign is housed in a white box with a black roof, mounted at reading height on a post. The bilingual English/Spanish sign welcomes visitors to the museum’s current exhibition, titled Texas Song Bird Song. It includes a short description of the project and a QR code for more information. The background is a sunlit paved trail with trees and a building partially visible.

Listening to the Birds: A Creative Collaboration in Austin

Birding is about so much more than spotting feathers through binoculars. It is about slowing down, listening deeply, and finding connection in unexpected places. A recent project in Austin embodies this beautifully.

The Trail Conservancy, which stewards the trail around Lady Bird Lake, recently partnered with the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI) to create The Texas Song Bird Song, 2025, a joyful, inclusive music and eco-education project. With the guidance of songwriter Eva Van Houten, TSBVI students explored birding through sound, memory, and imagination. They learned to identify birds by ear, mimic bird calls with mnemonics, and experience the wonder of migration in accessible and inclusive ways.

Out of this creative journey came an original song that blends student voices, authentic bird recordings, and simple musical storytelling. Performed by Kailee Martin, written by Eva Van Houten, and produced by Lacey Lewis, the piece celebrates Texas wildlife, honors student creativity, and reminds us to notice the soundscapes that surround us every day. You can hear the song, see visuals, and learn more about the project through <https://swn6onfbb.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001wZejzh-kokWVXeXSHABlTZ7oxMsbrj_r6sTZhE_OjhuUXeCcigrDCBVn2HXHNG80-i0OAJLe3ZB_y54SEr4b1FDdxq9J7jR4gW7wEYD9M0eV_2fjZhd34v4LUfnyZEAcSCCuXg5_5S5RlgNeZoAinMBJ8CXFqSvgiACCpD4_ATdIMJdWF4lNcuEbqQ6hW3YJIBNOgiEUrIVYDNMpjfg_mAq3d6bF8VDk&c=_UFVX6mAxpfB1JiLLkKWlzjRtfD0u7RPOSZee7vKdFkT1LpCL36r2g==&ch=4XjxBeRbjpCUACruNmS4FmfZEdCH2Y-6zBQNFsW8cDBZ4146LVsiyg==> The Trail Conservancy’s Point B arts and culture series here.

We were delighted to learn that Eva found inspiration in Birdability while developing this project. That inspiration will continue to ripple outward this fall, as Birdability’s founder, Virginia Rose, joins TSBVI students on campus to share accessible birding experiences during their bird unit.

At its heart, The Texas Song Bird Song shows what happens when creativity, accessibility, and the natural world come together. It is a reminder that birding is not just about what we see, but also about what we hear and feel. As migration fills Texas skies, this song invites us all to slow down and listen.

New Resource on Service Dogs & Accessible Birding

September was National Guide Dog Month, an ideal moment to create and share our newest resource, “Considerations for Incorporating Service Dogs into Accessible Bird Outings.” It’s a practical guide for trip leaders, volunteers, and participants that explains the role of service dogs and offers strategies to keep people, wildlife, and habitats safe while everyone enjoys birds together.

Service dogs aren’t pets; they’re highly trained working partners who support independence, safety, and access for people with disabilities. Welcoming them appropriately helps make birding truly available to folks who rely on service dogs. We touch on:

* Interaction etiquette: Never touch, talk to, or feed a service dog without the handler’s permission; if a service dog seeks your attention, the handler may need help.

* Privacy & questions: It’s never appropriate to ask why someone uses a service dog. Staff may ask only what tasks the dog is trained to perform.

* Wildlife considerations: Well-trained service dogs are conditioned to remain calm and focused, making them unlikely to disturb birds, even on sensitive outings.

Explore the full resource and share it with your chapter, field trip leaders, and local partners. We’re also spotlighting this work during Birdability Week with a Blind Birder Bird-a-Thon panel, so now’s a great time to refresh your outing practices.

Expanding the Birdability Outreach Program with Support From the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation

Birdability is honored to announce that we have been awarded a Creating Opportunities & Independence grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, beginning November 1, 2025.

With this support, we will expand the Birdability Outreach Program (BOP) to integrate accessible birding into rehabilitation hospitals and outpatient programs for individuals with spinal cord injuries. This work will include tailored programming, adaptive equipment, and collaborations with local birding and disability organizations, ensuring meaningful, sustainable impact.

We are deeply grateful to the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation for their decades of work advancing opportunities and independence for people living with SCI, and we are proud to continue Craig H. Neilsen’s legacy through the healing power of birding.
