I almost never forward computer virus alerts, since most are either bogus or of relatively minor impact, but this one has the potential to cause real wide-spread damage.  Even though the anticipated attack date is April 1, this does not appear to be an April Fool’s joke.  I urge you take precautions, such as those outlined below.

There have been a number of public reports about a malware worm, sometimes referred to as Conficker,  that is set to attack Microsoft Windows systems on April 1, 2009.  I.T. has been taking the appropriate steps to protect our corporate systems from this worm.  Although we do not provide support to our users’ home systems, we wanted to provide you with information that may help you protect your home system.  Feel free to forward this email to your home account so you can test your home systems.  Below are two links that can be used to check to see if your system is impacted by this worm:
   * http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=us_ghp_link_conficker_worm
   * http://www.mcafee.com

To test your system, attempt to access these websites.  If you are unable to reach either of these websites, your system may be infected.  Major anti-virus vendors and Microsoft have released several free tools that can verify the presence of a Conficker infection and remove the worm.  Microsoft has provided the following website to help you fix your system (refer to the section on how to remove the Conficker worm): http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/worms/conficker.mspx.
