Hi Pete. We will look at these and see how they square with
Missouri law already. We have to learn more about how this
really happened - not what happened, but who approved it. The
records to which we have been given access are clear. The
problems had at the hospital were unfortunate but routine. The
mother reported them. The nurse helped reposition Baby Mikaela
and said many new mothers have this trouble. So the facts have
been stipulated in the documents. Now comes the question: So why
did it get this far? How did it get so out of control?
Short answer: yes. Longer answer: We'll have to see where this
fits.
Warmly,
Gary

Good evening everyone,
This is wonderful news. Are you guys going to seek passage
of
legislation similar to that adopted in Maryland that protects
blind parents
from having their children taken away simply due to their
blindness? Just
thought I would put a bug in your ears in light of this case.
Congratulations to everyone in our Missouri Affiliate. You're
one step down
the road to preventing such incidents in the future.

We learned early this morning that the Missouri Division of
Children's
Services wanted to settle and released Mikaela to her parents
just hours
before the hearing. Blake and Erika are very happy to have
their baby at
home where she belongs. This is truly a victory for them but it
cannot be
the end of this case.
There have been several interviews already with the media this
afternoon.
The NFB of Missouri will be working with the attorney and the
parents to
proceed with litigation. The injustice cannot be undone; Nor
can these
parents regain precious time they should have had with their
newborn. We
must work to be sure this does not happen to other blind couples
when they
enter a hospital to have their baby.
More will be forthcoming in the days to come.
