QuickWire: Advocates for the Blind Resolve Tech-Accessibility Dispute With
Penn State

October 11, 2011, 5:52 pm

By Marc Parry<http://chronicle.com/blogs/wiredcampus/author/mparry>

One year ago, the country’s largest organization of blind people filed a
federal
complaint<http://chronicle.com/blogs/wiredcampus/penn-state-accused-of-discriminating-against-blind-students/28154>
charging that blind students and professors suffer “pervasive and ongoing
discrimination” at Pennsylvania State University because of the widely
inaccessible nature of technology used on the campus. That thunderous attack
ended with a whimper today. The National Federation of the Blind and Penn
State released a statement<http://www.nfb.org/NewsBot.asp?MODE=VIEW&ID=862>
saying the dispute has been resolved with “no admission of any wrongdoing.”
Their news release doesn’t elaborate much. Penn State stresses its long
history of providing assistive technologies to blind students, an effort it
plans to continue. The advocacy group emphasizes Penn State’s agreement to
take some vaguely described “additional steps” to deal with this issue.
