I will vote against cuts to the blind. Our state can do better than this and
should look at opportunities to create new resources that will make the
right investments to create a stronger economy and one that can
appropriately fund the values we share.

Dear representative still:

I am the president of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri, and
I write out of concern for a number of blind people who will be adversely
affected if the elimination of medical care for blind pension recipients
actually becomes law. There are a number of blind pension recipients who
will not qualify for other aid and who will not be eligible for insurance
because of pre-existing conditions. Even when they are eligible, many will
find the premiums for insurance to cover such things as diabetes, glaucoma,
and dialysis prohibitive. It is no accident that blind people have been
receiving medical care since 1967. Any change to this practice should be
one which is well studied, involves the blind, and is based on strong
financial data.

I urge you to do all you can to see that the funding cuts proposed in the
house budget are restored.

Gary Wunder, president
National Federation of the Blind of Missouri
