********ACTION ALERT********
Tell the Budget Conference Committee to
Fund the Healthcare Program for the Blind
The legislature has to pass the budget by this Friday, May 11th. The Budget Conference Committee has been meeting, but are getting hung up on a number of issues including funding a healthcare program for people who are blind.
Missouri Legislators Spar of Budget
The House removed funding for the program and created a new, more restrictive program. The Senate included full funding for the original healthcare for the blind program. If the funding is not restored, nearly 3,000 Missouri citizens who are blind will lose access to affordable medical care.
Tell the Budget Conference Committee members to support the Senate posistion and include full funding for the healthcare program for the blind.
The healthcare program for people receiving blind pension is vital to the health and well being of people who are blind.
a.. The blind unemployment rate is 70%, which prevents many from purchasing health insurance.
b.. The healthcare program for people receiving blind pension is a crucial safety net and eliminating this program will leave persons who are blind with no medical care.
Decreasing healthcare funds for Missouri citizens who are blind will ultimately increase costs for the State.
a.. Cutting healthcare for the blind will result in an increase in emergency room visits and nursing home stays.
b.. These expensive consequences will cost the State even more money than continuing to provide health insurance for these individuals.
Action:
Let the conferees know that you want them to support the Senate position and fund the healthcare program for the blind.
