Subject: [bardtalk] Registering with WTBBL - from a librarian at WTBBL

Dear BardTalk members,

My name is Eura Szuwalski and I am the Electronic Services and Instruction Librarian at the Washington Talking & Book & Braille Library (http://www.wtbbl.org/). I follow this informative listserv to stay ahead of patron concerns/problems related to downloading audio books on BARD.

After reading all of the buzz this past weekend, I wanted to clear up some information regarding our downloadable books.

The Washington Talking Book & Braille Library (WTBBL) produces books of local interest and titles that have not been considered by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) in studios at the library in Seattle, WA with assistance from our volunteers, many of whom have been recording for years. We then put the books up on our site for download for patrons of our library and patrons of other network libraries who have registered.

We use the same file format as NLS. At this time, we have not been approved to put our local books on BARD and we do not have an estimated date for when or if this will happen. To download our books, please email us at wtbbl at sos.wa.gov with your full name, your city and state of residence and your year of birth. You can also call at 206-615-0400 and provide the same information by phone. Just say you want to register for local downloadable books or ask for Tyler. We use your contact information to verify you are a patron with your network library and your year of birth will become your password.

Once you are registered, you will go tohttp://www.wtbbl.org/login.aspx to log into the site with the username and password (year of birth) that our patron registrar, Tyler, will give to you.

There is a search box with drop down menu (only text box on the page), which will allow you to search by title, author, narrator and date. You can also browse the "Books Recently Added" section for new young adult and adult books. Below this section, the remaining books are listed by adult and young adult and then alphabetically by author's last name.

As many members have mentioned, we try to be prompt with questions and concerns about our books and service. We are open Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (PST) and closed on most government holidays.

I hope this information is helpful and I welcome any questions. Since I am often on the phone helping patrons learn how to download and answering patron requests, I will try to respond as quickly as I can.

Thank you,

Eura
