[Nfbmo] Umbrellas

Fred, with all due respect I have to say that using an umbrella does not
mess up my sense of direction, my ability to hear cars, or my echolocation.
I have no idea how I will be more dangerous with an umbrella than anyone
else, and I guess if we were to travel down that lane very far, we might as
well give up the use of our white canes because we swing them back and
forth, often several feet ahead of where we are.

Besides my disagreement with your astonishment that we would sell umbrellas,
I ask you what you think you would be prepared to sell to help support the
work that we do. Our BELL Program could use a good fundraiser. Our Blind
Missourian is going to soon be available on audio flash drive. What
fundraiser would you suggest we employ to support this? None of what we do
comes for free, and it is a whole lot easier to talk about how silly a
fundraiser is then to shoulder some of the load and participate in the
programs we work so hard to carry on.

Really, umbrellas? I don't believe it. I believe umbrellas are one of the
most on useful things that blind people could ever make use of. They cause
much difficulty in terms of travel they create unwanted echoes and
information is so dispersed when getting to your ears that by the time it
gets there you have no idea where anything is around you. And let's not
forget the possibility of hurting someone. Oh well. JMO. Fred Olver
