I really like Roger's response and Bryan's willingness to hear it. My
thoughts about Mohammed Ali are that he irritated a lot of people with his
hype, but at a time when black people were supposed to be submissive, quiet,
and ever so respectful to those of us who are white, this boxer showed us
that he too had a right to be tough, that he too had a right to be
conceited, and that he too had been blessed with brains by our Creator. This
is no place for us to address racial relations and family history, so I will
simply conclude by saying that Mohammed Ali made me think a little bit about
the stereotypes I held about black people and the innate superiority of
white people. To the extent that he began to tear those beliefs apart, I am
indebted to him.
