[NFBMO] blind pension govt issue

The federal poverty guidelines (2017) state that, for a household of 2, the poverty line is $16,240 annually. 300% of that would be $48,720 annually.

Ableist language is so pervasive in legislation and most people don't even realize it, nor do they care often times.

If it says that, I'm not seeing it. I think it is trying to say that if you
have a sighted spouse who makes more than 300% above the poverty line, you
will not qualify. Interesting that it is expected that the sighted person
who marries a blind person is responsible for his or her income and that the
blind person is presumed to have no responsibility to bring food to the
table. What amount is 300% above the poverty line? Would it compensate for
losing $8400 a year? I wonder how much of that sighted person's income will
be eaten up by the medical costs that are no longer covered for the blind
pension recipient. I think we should learn more about this.

Please, don't quote me; but, my understanding is: The legislation seeks to
eliminate benefits for the spouse of the blind person.

I put in a call to his office and am hoping to get a call back. I am not
seeing on the site what the bill does except make some kind of change to the
fund.

Hi,

People interested in governmental issues involving blind pension need to
visit www.house.mo.gov<http://www.house.mo.gov> <http://www.house.mo.gov> and type hb2171 in the
strip and see if they can understand what rep. wood wants to change then
explain it in English to the rest of us.
