[NFBMO] Progress on Case Reopening and a Question

I was able to speak with a counselor today, and sign the necessary papers through docusign. I sent to her the necessary documentation, award letter, eye report from 2007, etc. However, they want something saying there are no concerns with my prosthetic eyes, which is a new one on me. I don’t know if I can get an appointment with the ocularist in a timely manner. The question I have though, is what happens when RSB says that the organization hosting the program of interest is not a vendor? Is that the end of the line, or is there a chance that that could change? I have no idea what the process would be, if there is one, to change that. The program I am interested in is through the Carrol Center, and they are the only ones I know of who have a program like the Screen Reader User Tester program.

I couldn’t get ahold of anyone Friday. Our state celebrates Abe Lincoln’s birthday apparently. So, I will try again tomorrow.

Linda, did you call the 800 phone number I gave you? Start there. They really can help you with a lot of this over the phone.

Of course, yesterday was a state holiday, so I got no answer when I called. No recording on the voice mail that said that, but I found out when I contacted another state entity for a completely different reason. Where would I submit that award letter? I wish I had known that 11 years ago when I had my case reopened. It’s confusing to me, that reopening a case is really more like starting over. I think this would be the 4th time I would have had to reopen my case, since having first opened one as a high school student in ’90.

That’s good to know about presumed eligibility. I wasn’t yet back on disability, when I reopened my case.

This definitely should not be the case. I have seen cases get opened and a determination of eligibility occur in one day. I doubt if it happens very frequently but it can happen. One way to expedite a case if you are on SSI or SSDI is to submit a copy of your award letter which indicates you are receiving benefits based on blindness. It is called presumed eligibility.

Getting the state of Missouri to expedite anything, LOL. Good luck but expect that it will take 3 to 6 months just to get your case opened.

Hi Linda,

Call 1 (800) 592-6004 and tell them that you want to reopen your case. They will refer you to an RSB counselor, who will help you complete most of the paperwork over the phone. You’ll need to have a current I exam. The counselor also will come out to your house, to get more details on why you need to reopen your case. I did this about a year ago. It took about a month. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,
Mike

Hello all. I have been working in a part time job for 10 years, where the hours have been dwindling lately, to about 8 a week. What is the process for getting an RSB case reopened? Does it have to be a long, drawn out process? I have found a program that would give me the training I need to find a better job, that I will definitely need financial help with, but I only have a little less than a month to get into it. I’m hoping maybe some of you who have been here before, may have some tips on how I can expedite the process, if it is at all possible? Thanks.
