The American Safety Council urges you to ensure that this Thanksgiving Day is a safe day at your house by thinking T-U-R-K-E-Y.

T - Thaw your turkey at a safe temperature of 40 degrees F or below. If you decide to thaw your turkey in cold water, allow a thawing time of 30 minutes per pound. Wrap the turkey securely, making sure water cannot leak through the wrapping. Submerge the turkey in cold tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes, and cook the turkey immediately after it is thawed. If you are thawing in your refrigerator, use the chart below to help you determine when to move the bird from the freezer to the fridge.

U - Use extra caution when frying a turkey. If possible, use an oil-free fryer that relies on infrared heat to cook the turkey. If you do use a traditional fryer, be aware that a small amount of cooking oil on a burner can cause a large fire, and that an overfilled cooking pot or partially frozen turkey will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is inserted. Also, the sides of the pot, the pot lid and the pot handles can get extremely hot, creating a severe burn hazard. Units can easily tip over. Fryers that are not equipped with thermostats may overheat the oil to the point of combustion.

R - Remember to clean all cooking surfaces regularly. Make sure those who are helping you in the kitchen do the same to prevent contamination of clean surfaces, dishes and utensils. Use hot, soapy water to clean utensils you may reuse.

K - Keep children away from hot foods, hot surfaces and kitchen utensils.

E - Ensure the turkey is completely cooked and has reached a minimum temperature of 165 degrees F. To be safe, use a kitchen thermometer to check the temperature; if your turkey came with a pre-inserted pop-up thermometer, don't rely on it for an accurate temperature reading.

Y - Your smoke detector should be tested prior to cooking.
