[Nfbmt] A ridiculous Question

We all know that there are many disabled people out there who are not even
trying to live up to their potential, they have bought into the lie that
they can't do things and so they just don't try. I think this makes our
job so much harder because many people have a preconceived notion of what we
are capable of. The only way to fix this is to get out there and model an
independent life for people to see and to talk to disabled people who are
not trying to achieve and encourage them to pull themselves up and do
something. We need to change the "status quo."

part of the problem is that people don't see us as strong capable folks able
to work. We also were told on one occasion by a well meaning friend that you
mean you nice people don't get a free house? He was serious.
People believe we get all of this free stuff so don't need mimimum wage or
benefits because oh my don't you qualify for medicaid.
