[Nfbmt] Hands up, who among us?

My friend and roomate back in Ruston in the late 1990s is employed at the
center in Seattle.
He told me he is going to be working on the new Unified Braille code, too,
as part of their curriculum.

I did read in the Monitor a few months back an announcement about the new
code being available for purchase now.

So far, we have heard from Joy, Dar and Jim about Braille on this list.
Are there any others?

Knowing who all regularly posts on this list and who are on our affiliate
board, I think most are pretty much long time Braille readers.
But I am actually hoping there are others who may chime in.
So I am asking others to speak up, too.

I don't have any real proposal. But maybe something amongst us can bubble
up.
I remember back when actually folks who became friends at the old summer
program used to just be like pen pals and be doing the Hadley home study
program.
Sounds pretty practical.

I have never slowed down enough to force myself to allocate proper Braille
learning the time required. My sense of touch is not so good. And gosh, I am
getting older, now too. How the heck did that happen?.

I wonder if amongst our Montanans who are in the state of experiencing
vision loss, they are the ones who probably could benefit and find value in
a program such as Joy proposes.

I am wondering about remote ways to do things like that. Using the internet
and conferencing types of ways to do things together in real time, without
actually being in the same town.

Perhaps something like this is actually going on. You think?

Thanks for thinking.
Rik

Hi Rik and all,

As you probably know, the UEB will be officially launched starting
January, 2016. It is presently quite readable by those who have used
braille for years. since the braille rules will change, I probably
would seek out materials recommended by our three NFB Centers if I were
to attempt to teach it! Braille manuals have been produced for adults
who wish to learn braille and they would be taught by those who kno
braille. I would not attempt teaching braille without some kind of
manual. I too have to get use to the new rules in The United English
Braille Code.

Jim
