Dayton region to get new '326' area code
Elizabeth KyleAug 9, 2018, 9:05am EDT
The Dayton area will be welcoming a new telephone area code beginning March 2020.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved a plan to implement a new 326 area code that will overlay the existing 937 area code that largely serves the southwest region of Ohio, including Dayton.
The North American Numbering Plan Administrator has identified a plan in partnership with PUCO in response to the area code's predicted "exhaust" date, meaning the 937 area code will run out of available phone numbers in 2020.
Mandatory 10- to 11-digit dialing for all local calls will begin on Feb. 8, 2020. The new 326 area code will take effect on March 8, 2020.
Current numbers with 937 area codes will not change. Calls between numbers with 937 and 326 area codes will be considered local calls and long distance calling procedures will not change.
Leading up to the area code addition in 2020, telecommunications providers will begin customer education initiatives Feb. 11, 2019. Beginning Aug. 10, 2019, PUCO encourages customers to begin 10 or 11-digit dialing for all local calls "so that it is second nature when it becomes necessary on Feb. 8, 2020," according to a press release.
Customers are encouraged to update any saved contacts, speed dials, business cards, personal checks, preprogrammed alarm devices and more to include the area code in its telephone number format.
