Comments to Protect IDEA funding due April 1 at 8AM Central Time

Efforts are being made to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. This threatens the systems that protect students’ rights, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

The IDEA was enacted at a time when children with disabilities were denied access to public education, excluded from classrooms, or sent to institutions instead of being given the opportunity to learn, grow, and belong in their communities. IDEA fundamentally changed that reality, recognizing and writing into law the inherent worth of every child; guaranteeing disabled students the right to a free, appropriate public education. (Credit: Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD).)

In Nebraska, the Unicameral’s Education Committee has scheduled a public hearing on Legislative Resolution 422 for April 1, 2026 @ 12:00 PM in Room 1525 of the State Capitol.

A summary of LR 422 reads as follows:

LR422 - Urge Congress and the President of the United States to enact legislation to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

The deadline to submit and verify a comment so that it will be entered into the record of the hearing is Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 8:00 AM Central Time.

Online comments can be submitted here. Look for the tan bar in the middle of the page that says "Submit Comments Online for LR 422".
