Research Participation Request: Developing an Accessible Home-Based
Exercise Program with and for Blind People

The below research participant solicitation is being provided for
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has
no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may
contribute to our research mission.

Research Title: Developing an Accessible Home-Based Exercise Program
with and for Blind People

Being conducted by: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Purpose of the Study

Most online content in physical activity and exercise programs
predominantly targets sighted populations, often using
visually-oriented designs and demonstrative pronouns that are
inaccessible for those with visual impairments. Local sports
facilities, including gyms, remain largely inaccessible as well due
to physical and communication barriers. This research aims to address
this gap by developing accessible verbal instructions specifically
for people with visual impairments. The created educational materials
will be utilized for visually impaired individuals' regular exercise
engagement. To promote exercise learning and physical activity
engagement among blind individuals, the UIUC health researchers
developed accessible, designed muscle-strengthening exercise verbal
instructions. By inviting blind adults who are interested in online
exercise training, the research team aims to test the feasibility and
accessibility of the designed exercise scripts.

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participants will be asked to participate in two sessions of a 1-hour
virtual exercise program via Zoom conferencing system. During an
hour, the research team will teach muscle-strengthening methods using
the newly developed accessible verbal instructions.

Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, $50 Amazon eGift card.

Link or Instructions for Participants to Enter the Study

We are planning to recruit five participants on a first-come,
first-served basis who are eager to actively learn and engage in exercise.

If you are interested, please send us a short self-introduction along
with your intention to participate in the study by email. Our
research team will then respond to you through your preferred method
of communication. Here is the contact information:
