Research Title: Understanding Blind and Low-Vision Users’ Lived Experiences with AI- Powered Smart Glasses
Being conducted by: William & Mary
Purpose of the Study
We want to examine how blind and low-vision (BLV) individuals experience AI-powered smart glasses (e.g., Envision Glasses, Ray-ban Meta) in everyday use. Through a survey and optional follow-up interviews, we seek to understand: which tasks users rely on smart glasses for and why they choose them over alternatives; how they navigate AI reliability and verification challenges specific to the wearable form factor; and what design changes (e.g., modality of interaction with AI, privacy policies) would better serve BLV individuals. We also aim to capture the perspectives of non-adopters to understand barriers to access and adoption.
Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study
Participants will complete an online survey (approximately 20 minutes) covering their use of AI-powered smart glasses, experiences with AI reliability and verification, and views on device design. Those who opt into a follow-up interview will participate in a 30-minute semi-structured interview exploring their experiences in greater depth.
Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, Survey participants will be entered into a draw for one of three $50 gift cards upon completing the survey. Winners will be selected randomly from all respondents and notified by email. Participants who complete a follow-up interview will receive a $30 gift card as compensation.
