The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

 

Aspiring journalist Andrea "Andy" Sachs has recently graduated from Northwestern University. Despite her lack of knowledge of the fashion industry, she is hired as a junior personal assistant to Miranda Priestly, the cruel editor-in-chief of Runway magazine in New York City. Andy resolves to tolerate Miranda's abusive treatment until she can use her connections from Runway to find a journalism-focused job.

 

Andy fits in poorly with her superficial, fashion-forward co-workers, particularly Miranda's British senior assistant, Emily Charlton, and struggles to meet Miranda's irrational demands. After she fails to arrange for Miranda to be flown back from Miami during a hurricane, she is berated. She then approaches Runway's art director Nigel for advice, and he helps her select stylish clothes to fit the extremely fashion-conscious workplace.

 

Noticing Andy's increased commitment to the job, Miranda delegates more important tasks to her. Andy soon outperforms Emily, who yearns to attend Paris Fashion Week as Miranda's assistant. In preparation for the event, Emily follows extreme diets that endanger her health.

 

When Emily arrives to work sick and forgets the names of important guests at a charity benefit, Andy steps in to save Miranda from embarrassment. Miranda subsequently selects Andy to accompany her to Paris Fashion Week. Emily is horrified that Andy accepted Miranda's offer. After Andy snaps at her boyfriend Nate, he breaks up with her, disappointed that she has become one of the shallow, egotistical women she once ridiculed.

 

In Paris, Andy learns that Miranda's husband has filed for divorce. Later that night, Nigel tells Andy that he has accepted a job as creative director for rising designer James Holt. Andy spends the night with an attractive writer, Christian Thompson, who tells her that Jacqueline Follet (Miranda's counterpart as editor-in-chief at French Runway) is being prepared to replace Miranda. Andy attempts to warn Miranda, who dismisses her.

 

At a luncheon, Miranda announces Jacqueline as Holt's new creative director and later reveals that she already knew of the scheme to replace her and sacrificed Nigel's ambitions to preserve her own job. Andy is repulsed by Miranda's betrayal of her friend, but Miranda points out that Andy did the same thing to Emily. Afraid to become the type of person Miranda is, Andy storms off. When Miranda tries calling her, Andy tosses her phone into the Fontaines de la Concorde.

 

Back in New York, Andy meets up with Nate, who tells her he has a new job as a sous-chef in Boston, and they agree to keep in touch. The same day, Andy has an interview at the New York Mirror newspaper. The editor recounts that when he called Runway for a reference, Miranda told him that Andy was the biggest disappointment she had ever had as an assistant and that he would be an idiot not to hire her.

 

After getting the job, Andy calls Emily and offers her the clothes she obtained in Paris. While walking past the Runway office building, Andy sees Miranda and waves at her. Miranda does not acknowledge her but smiles to herself once seated in her car.

The Devil wears Prada 2 (2026)

Two decades after leaving her position as an assistant at Runway magazine,[a] Andrea "Andy" Sachs has become a respected reporter in New York City. However, her entire newsroom is abruptly laid off by text message during an awards gala. Meanwhile, Miranda Priestly, Andy's old Runway boss, is under fire for publishing a puff piece about a brand that uses sweatshop labor.

 

To improve the magazine's credibility, Irv Ravitz, the owner of Runway's parent company, Elias-Clarke, and Miranda's boss, hires Andy as the features editor without Miranda's consent, to her annoyance. An uncharacteristically listless Miranda struggles to navigate modern fashion media. Although some of her tyrannical office behaviors remain, HR complaints have blunted her imperiousness. On the other hand, she enjoys a comfortable relationship with her husband, Stuart.

 

Miranda's right-hand man, Nigel Kipling, explains that nobody reads Runway's print edition anymore and that the brand has been forced to embrace online clickbait and cheaply made short-form content to maintain profits and relationships with advertisers. One key advertiser is Dior, which employs Emily Charlton, Andy's former Runway co-worker. Emily leverages the controversy over the Runway puff piece to secure her own puff piece, which Miranda assigns to Andy. During the interview, Emily and Andy argue about how modern fashion raises prices and shuts out middle-class consumers.

 

After writing serious articles that gain minimal traction, Andy improves her standing at Runway by brokering a coveted interview with Sasha Barnes, the reclusive divorcée of a Silicon Valley billionaire. Irv promises to make Miranda global head of content at Elias-Clarke, but dies from a heart attack at his 75th birthday party before he can officially announce the promotion. His son, Jay, takes over Elias-Clarke, but lacks Irv's sentimental attachment to either fashion or Runway. He puts Miranda's promotion on hold while bringing in management consultants to recommend cost cuts. To Andy's surprise, Miranda bears with it. Meanwhile, Andy's relationship with her new boyfriend Peter sours when she unintentionally insults his job as an apartment renovator while fretting that she may lose her own position. Considering her options, Andy explores writing a tell-all about Miranda with a publisher, who offers her a lucrative contract, but Andy is conflicted.

 

During Milan Fashion Week, Nigel orchestrates a Runway gala starring Lady Gaga. Andy devises a plan to save Runway by convincing a wealthy patron to buy it from Jay. The patron is Benji, Sasha's ex-husband and Emily's current boyfriend. Andy and Emily reveal the plan to Miranda, who is furious because she knows Emily plans to take her position at Runway. Miranda admits that she pushed Emily out of Runway because Emily lacks creative vision. Miranda tries to take the loss with grace, but while talking to Benji, she is alarmed by his vision of Runway's staff being replaced by AI.

 

To prevent Benji and Emily from destroying Runway, Miranda directs Andy to find a competing buyer. Andy convinces Sasha to buy not just Runway but all of Elias-Clarke, and Jay accepts her offer, pulling out of his deal with Benji. Miranda realizes she has taken Nigel for granted over the years. To make amends, she invites him to deliver the gala's keynote speech in her place, so she and Andy can finalize the deal with Sasha, who gives Miranda the promotion Irv promised her.

 

As the Runway staff return to New York, Miranda admits to Andy that the latter's idealism inspired her to fight back. She also reveals that she knows about Andy's plans for a tell-all and encourages her to write it, including the negative aspects of Miranda's life. Andy reconciles with Peter and a defeated Emily, whom Benji has broken up with. Nigel reveals he was the one who prompted Irv to rehire Andy, as he has always liked her. Miranda gives Andy a nicer office and returns to work with a renewed imperiousness.

Champions (2023)

Marcus Marakovich, a hot-headed assistant coach for a minor league basketball team in Iowa, gets fired after shoving the head coach and later crashing into a police car while drunk. Given the choice between jail or community service, he chooses to coach a team of players with learning disabilities, *The Friends*.

 

Initially resistant, Marcus begins to bond with the team and reconnects with Alex, the sister of one player, Johnny—who he previously had a fling with. As Marcus learns to care about the players and their lives, his attitude shifts. He tries to use the team’s success as a stepping stone to the NBA, but after a series of personal revelations and missteps—including hurting Johnny and being manipulative—he changes course.

 

In the face of funding issues and personal struggles, the team makes it to the Special Olympics finals. Though they lose, they consider themselves champions thanks to Marcus’s growth and their own perseverance.

 

Marcus declines an NBA offer, stays in town, and begins coaching at Drake University. He and Alex start dating, and Johnny moves in with friends. In a post-credit scene, Showtime finally lands his signature backward shot.
