The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.

 

Research Title: Disability Disclosure in Conversational AI

 

Being conducted by: Carnegie Mellon University

 

Purpose of the Study

We are studying how disabled adults use conversational AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot in everyday life. Through one-on-one interviews, we want to understand what people choose to tell these systems about themselves and their circumstances, what they expect the system to do with that information, and how those choices shape the help they get back. We are equally interested in people who tried these tools and have since stopped. Our aim is to produce concrete design guidance for building assistants that work better for disabled users.

 

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study 

Participants take part in one semi-structured interview over Zoom, lasting 60 to 90 minutes, scheduled at a time that works for them. It is a conversation about their everyday use of AI assistants and specific experiences they have had with them. With the participant's consent, the session is recorded and later transcribed, and recordings are de-identified before analysis. Participation is voluntary; participants may skip any question or stop at any point. Accommodations are arranged at no cost to the participant, including live captions or CART, scheduled breaks, extra time or splitting the interview across two sessions, study materials that work with a screen reader, the option to answer in writing or in the Zoom chat, and a low-distraction format with a slower pace.

 

Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, Participants receive $20 for the interview, provided as an Amazon gift card or a Venmo payment. Participants choose which they prefer. The study has been approved by the Carnegie Mellon University IRB, protocol STUDY2026_00000228.
