Social Media for World Braille Day

Greetings and happy new year!

This Thursday, January 4, is World Braille Day. In celebration, we’ll be sharing facts about Braille, stories of Braille users and teachers, links to videos, and much more on social media. We asked Google to create a new Google Doodle in celebration of this day, but we will likely have to wait until next year given their incredibly long lead time for these requests.

Feel free to follow and share what we are doing on our social media accounts. Be on the lookout for the #BrailleIsBeautiful hashtag. Below are some suggested posts and links that you can use or adapt on your local NFB social media pages. If your state is participating in the national Braille Readers are Leaders contest World Braille Day is a great time to promote that on social media.

Twitter Ideas

a.. Happy #WorldBrailleDay! What was the first Braille book you read? #BrailleIsBeautiful

b.. #WorldBrailleDay is also Louis Braille's birthday! Learn how this inventive young man created the code used by countless blind people over the last 188 years https://nfb.org/1829-braille-book

c.. #BrailleFact: A blind child can learn to read Braille just as efficiently as a sighted child can learn to read print - @RNIB #WorldBrailleDay #BrailleIsBeautiful https://www.rnib.org.uk/braille-and-moon-%E2%80%93-tactile-codes-learning-braille/braille-courses-children-and-young-people

Facebook Ideas

a.. In honor of #WorldBraille Day, we dug up this blog post from 2013 in which Jerry Whittle dispelled some of the myth surrounding Braille http://blog.pdrib.com/how-to-learn-braille-in-6-months-myths-realities/

b.. To celebrate #WorldBrailleDay, tell us about the first Braille book you read!

c.. Did you know that Braille literacy leads to higher rates of employment for blind people? It’s just one reason the NFB believes #BrailleIsBeautiful!

We will do our best to follow affiliate, division, and chapter social media feeds as well. If the communications team can be of assistance, do not hesitate to reach out to us at communicationsteam at nfb.org.

Best,

Kirsten
