                                June 19, 2020

A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW JERSEY STATE
LIBRARIAN

With summer officially starting this week, I
am pleased to announce that Stage 2 of NJ's reopening plan has begun,
permitting library curbside pickup. Pursuant to the provisions of Executive
Order No. 153 (2020), libraries are now permitted to reopen their outdoor
spaces to the public. However, patrons shall not be permitted to enter the
brick-and-mortar premises, but instead, shall be permitted to pick up or
drop off materials outside of the facility that they have already ordered
(“curbside pickup/drop-off”). Colonel Patrick J. Callahan, the State
Director of Emergency Management, signed Administrative Order No. 2020-15 on
June 13, 2020. The full executive order can be found here.

Additionally, I do have more exciting news
to share. The Braille eReader pilot project will begin in July. NLS needs
the user comments on the eReader to make the player a future model for our
patrons.

Speaking of needing input, the state’s
Commission for the Blind needs your thoughts on a statewide survey they are
conducting. More information is in the newsletter.

Both our book club and bingo games are
gaining more people.

Finally, this Sunday is Father’s Day. Luz
and Liz K. have a list of audiobooks on fathers for you to enjoy.

Enjoy our newsletter and please continue to
be safe.

                                Thank you,
                                Mary

                                Mary L. Chute
                                New Jersey State Librarian

                                CBVI STATEWIDE SURVEY

The New Jersey Commission for the Blind and
Visually Impaired is conducting a Comprehensive Statewide Needs assessment
to understand the needs of their customers, providers, and other
stakeholders. This will inform their State Plan and guide priorities and the
development of new initiatives.

We invite current and past CBVI consumers,
service recipients, and their family members to tell us about their
experience. Please click the link below to provide your input in this
accessible web survey form by July 3rd:
                                https://umassboston.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8q2r6MI6E46rk21

The survey will take about 10 minutes, and
the responses are anonymous. If you have any questions about the survey or
would prefer to use an alternative format, please contact Amanda Gerson at
Amanda.gerson at dhs.state.nj.us.

                                NLS BRAILLE eREADER PILOT PROJECT

The library is excited to announce that the
National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) has invited
us to participate in the NLS Braille eReader Pilot Project. The pilot is
currently scheduled to begin in July of 2020 and will last six months.

TBBC is one of four Regional Libraries of
NLS selected for Phase 1 of the pilot project. The other three libraries
participating are:
                                a.. Kentucky Talking Book Library
b.. Iowa Library for the Blind
                                c.. Utah State Library Division

The NLS Braille eReader is a refreshable
braille display (an electro-mechanical device for displaying braille
characters) that will allow patrons to read braille books on digital
cartridges. Library patrons with Internet access will be able to download
braille from BARD on a 24/7 basis, will be able to maintain a braille
collection on the Braille eReader, and will no longer be required to receive
and return multiple volumes of cumbersome hard copy braille books through
the postal system.

The purpose of the NLS Braille eReader Pilot
is to test the functionality of the eReader devices, collect feedback from
pilot patrons, and validate distribution processes at network libraries. The
pilot libraries were selected based on criteria including region,
circulation system, and size, and on their ability to meet reporting
requirements and provide technical support during the pilot. The four
libraries will distribute 1,600 eReaders to Braille patrons. Staff training
begins on June 23rd.

The NLS Braille eReader Pilot Project will
lay the groundwork for the general distribution of braille eReaders, which
will increase access to digital braille materials, promote braille literacy,
and provide access to tens of thousands of braille titles in digital format,
supporting the NLS mission statement of assuring that all may read.

                                BARD WEBSITE NEWS

The BARD website was upgraded on Friday,
June 4, 2020. Upgrades include:

                                Subscribe to a book series:

a.. From the BARD main page, type the name
or part of the name of the series in the search field, such as Harry Potter,
and click the Go button.

a.. Under the Book Series heading on the
resulting page, all book series titles that include the words “Harry” or
“Potter” will be listed. Click the series of interest to display all
available books in that series.

a.. Under the heading Audiobooks or Braille
books, depending on which format you want, click the Subscribe button. BARD
will automatically add new titles in the series in the preferred format to
your wish list. The two other buttons in this area have to do with adding
currently available books in the series to your wish list. These buttons do
not subscribe you to the series.

A second way to subscribe to a book series:

a.. Locate a book by searching the catalog,
or through one of the BARD book lists, such as Most Popular Books or
Recently Added Books and Magazines, that you know is in the series of
interest.

a.. Open the book details by clicking the
title of the book.

a.. Click on the series name found in the
Book Details. This will open a web page that displays all the available
books in the series.

a.. Choose the Subscribe button under the
preferred format heading: Audiobooks or Braille books. New books in your
preferred format in the series will be automatically added to your wish list
when they become available on BARD. The two other buttons in this area have
to do with adding books to your wish list. These buttons do not subscribe
you to the series.

                                Managing Subscriptions:

In addition to subscribing to a favorite
book series, patrons can manage all of their subscriptions.

a.. From the BARD main page, click the
Subscriptions link. This page lists all book series and magazines you are
subscribed to.

a.. To opt out of any of the subscriptions,
click the Unsubscribe link following the item you wish to unsubscribe to. No
new magazine additions or books in the series will be added to your wish
list.

                                Passwords:

a.. Account-holders are not allowed to reuse
any of their previous 11 passwords.

a.. Patrons will not be able to change their
own password more than once per day. NOTE: BARD administrators can reset a
patron’s password without affecting the number of password changed by the
user

a.. BARD will no longer accept special
characters in new password. When creating a new password, account-holders
should not include special characters when creating new passwords. Note: If
a current password contains a special character, there is no need to create
a new password. Existing passwords that use special characters will not be
rejected by BARD.

Lastly, the computer code behind the website
will be improved to better allow for BARD to be moved to the cloud, making
way for future service improvements such as device synchronization
