Who We Are & What We Do
The National Federation of the Blind, the oldest and largest organization
of and for the blind in the US, is made up of blind/visually impaired
people of all ages, and their families and friends. We help newly blind
people adjust to eyesight loss, assist parents and teachers of blind
children, and promote the full participation and integration of blind
people in our communities. Our activities include:
- Assisting blind persons in acquiring the skills of independence and
developing confidence in themselves
- Supporting parents and teachers of blind children with information,
mentoring, role modeling, and training
- Preparing blind students for careers and self-sufficiency through
mentoring, training, and academic scholarship
- Encouraging blind seniors to continue to live active and meaningful
lives
- Advocating for policies that eliminate discrimination, promote civil
rights, and guarantee equal access to high quality educational and
rehabilitation programs
- Sponsoring information campaigns and legislative action at the state
and national levels
- Educating the public through community activities and publications
Spotlight on the NFB of New Jersey
Since 1976, the National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey, an
affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind, has been providing
invaluable information and resources to blind/visually impaired people
throughout the state. Our members work together for a brighter tomorrow by
raising expectations for blind people everywhere so that blind persons can
live the life they want. Our seven chapters meet monthly; our four
divisions and our three committees meet at various times throughout the
year.” Please join us — we would welcome your participation and
membership. For more information on the affiliate, chapters, divisions,
committees, programs, and projects, visit www.nfbnj.org.
Live the Life You Want
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back. Together with love, hope, and
determination, we transform dreams into reality.
The National Federation of the Blind Pledge
I pledge to participate actively in the efforts of the National Federation
of the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind;
to support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.
Integrity and Respect
To allow all attendees the chance to benefit from all aspects of the
convention, we are committed to providing a harassment-free environment for
everyone. We appreciate your assistance in cultivating an atmosphere in
which participants from diverse backgrounds can learn, network, and share
with each other in an environment of mutual respect. Thank you for doing
your part to contribute to our community and the high expectations we
strive to maintain.

You can still be a Convention *Sponsor*
Companies and individuals can support the programs and projects of the NFB
of NJ by becoming a convention sponsor. There are four levels of
sponsorship. Find out more by clicking the link below. You can also write a
check to NFBNJ and send it to Affiliate Treasurer Annemarie Cooke (7
Mayfair Road, Southampton, NJ 08088); please write “Convention Sponsor” in
the memo section.

*Covid Protocol*
Masking will be required in all convention spaces when not actively eating
or drinking. Acceptable masks are N95, KN95 or KF94. Cloth masks or
surgical masks are not sufficient. Project N95
<https://www.projectn95.org/> has
several different brands and varieties; free N95s are also available in a
limited capacity in most retail pharmacies. The affiliate will be providing
approved masks at the convention free of charge.
All attendees will be required to provide proof of a negative covid test
taken within 72 hours of arriving. The test can be either a rapid antigen
test or a PCR test. Free home tests are available from the state of New
Jersey and the federal government. Free accessible home rapid tests
<https://special.usps.com/testkits/accessible> can be ordered online, or by
calling 1-800-232-0233. These tests are accessible and require use of a
smartphone.
Results may be emailed to testresults at nfbnj.org or presented in person at
the hotel. Confirmation of a negative COVID-19 test result is required to
pick up registration materials and to participate in all convention
activities.
Vaccinations are not required; however, it is strongly encouraged that
attendees become up to date on their Covid vaccinations as these are the
most effective way to prevent severe disease, hospitalization, and death,
and are another tool to help slow the spread of the disease. The New Jersey
Covid-19 Information Hub <https://covid19.nj.gov/> has additional resources
on masks, testing, and vaccines.
Any conventioneer who becomes positive while at convention must quarantine;
all efforts will be made to deliver purchased food to your room coordinated
by a chapter president. Refunds will not be issued under any circumstances
since the Affiliate is required to pick up the cost for all meals ordered.

Meet our National Representative:
Shelia Wright grew up in a small town in South Carolina. Though her vision
was never good, she did not know that she was blind until she was sixteen,
when she finally saw an eye doctor that talked openly about her blindness
and the importance of her learning Braille while she was still young. He
urged Shelia and her parents to check to see if South Carolina had a school
for the blind. This led her family to contact the Commission for the Blind,
but the agency did little to provide the services she needed. They claimed
she had too much vision to need training in Braille and Cane travel.
Shelia attended the University of South Carolina and received a B.A. in
Psychology and a M.Ed. in Vocational Rehabilitation. She worked in the
field of Rehabilitation for the Blind for over thirty years.
Shelia came to the Federation as a struggling blind person, having been
told that she would never make it through a semester in college. When the
National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina, through its
then-President Donald Capps, weighed in on her behalf, rehabilitation
services in South Carolina looked at Shelia in a whole new light. The
Federation believed in her to such an extent that they frequently asked her
to do things she thought she could not do. Each accomplishment propelled
her toward becoming the woman she is today.
Shelia currently serves as the President of the National Federation of the
Blind of Missouri. She was elected to the National Board of Directors in
July 2022.
National Scholarship Program – Call for Applications Begins Nov. 1
Every year, the National Federation of the Blind awards more than $120,000
to blind scholars across the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and
Puerto Rico, in recognition of their achievements and professional
aspirations. The scholarship program is our commitment to academic
excellence and leadership among blind students, and each winner is awarded
based on academic excellence, community service, and leadership. The
application process opens November 1. To learn about eligibility and
requirements of the 2022 scholarship program visit this link:
https://www.nfb.org/programs-services/scholarships-and-awards/scholarship-program
Review the online scholarship application checklist and program FAQs. Let
others know about this program that invests in the future of blind people.
Pre-Authorized Contribution Plan (PAC Plan)
PAC stands for Pre-Authorized Contribution. Each month, the amount you
have designated is automatically deducted from your checking or savings
account. That sum, which may be as little as five dollars, helps fund
projects like the NFB Free White Cane program, and is also used to take
care of “rainy day” expenditures that may arise unexpectedly.
To arrange for PAC Plan contributions, go to www.nfb.org/pac and fill out
the form. The National Center will call you to take payment information.
You can also call 877-635-2711 or email pac at nfb.org to enroll. The National
Center will contact individuals for financial and banking information
following the convention. Donations can be direct withdrawals from a
checking account or charges to a credit card for additional assistance,
contact Annemarie Cooke, Treasurer, National Federation of the Blind of New
Jersey, by phone at: 609-859-4084, or by email at: aec732 at gmail.com.
