COLUMBIA CHAPTER MEETING May 8, 2014
We all enjoyed Ike's spaghetti dinner at the chapter meeting. Janice Crosby sang for us for the devotional. President Parnell Diggs addressed the audience as he recounted the success of the Blind Person's Right to Parent Act which has already passed the Senate and just got through the House subcommittee on to the full Judiciary Committee. Everyone is encouraged to be at the Judiciary Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. or 90 minutes following the adjournment of the House in room 516of the Blatt Building at the Capitol Complex. He encouraged the Columbia Chapter to use its van to get members to the Judiciary Committee meeting. He also spoke of the Advocacy Day for Disabilities activities earlier that day at the State House. We received an update on Parnell's running for SC Attorney General as well. Let's support our state president!
Donna O'Neal was the Mother of the Year and we salute all our mothers for all they do. Let's show it on Mother's Day! Leana Hall was asked to run for Queen of her church and the $56 freewill offering was taken up to support her effort in this regard. Leanna works hard for the chapter and we are glad to support her. Dr. Capps introduced longtime federation member, Clarendon Chapter President and state board member Marty McKenzie to address the chapter regarding his work with the School for the Deaf and Blind's Outreach Program, assisting blind children statewide. As you can see, Marty keeps very busy in work with the blind. Proiscilla Alston was voted in as a voting member and she is making plans to attend the Orlando convention.
The June meeting will be held on Thursday, June 5 so the chapter van can be used for Children's Camp. Thom Spittle thanked the chapter for their support in using the van. The final report on barbecue ticket sales is not complete but all funds should be turned n by the BINGO next Thursday to get credit for all your sales. The chapter treasury has a current balance of $6,965. Dr. Capps gave an impassioned plea for all of us to think about how we can do better in 2015 in barbecue ticket sales as this year we seem to be well below our target. Some may have worked hard but others may need to reassess their level of participation in order to ensure that chapter members can receive the best possible assistance for national and state conventions and the chapter can meet its financial obligations. See you at BINGO and at Rocky Bottom!
Steve Sheck, President, Columbia Chapter NFB of SC
