Seminars at Hadley Presents: Braille Exchange: The Changing Braille Code: How Did We Get to UEB and Why?

Date: Thursday, March 12, 2015

Time: 10:00 AM CST, 16:00 GMT

There is a lot of buzz surrounding the new Unified English Braille code (UEB). What is it? How did we get here? And why make a change to the existing EBAE code?

Join Seminars at Hadley as Hadley instructors Danette Johnson, Vileen Shah and Jennifer Ottowitz discuss how braille has changed through the years and how UEB came about. Basic changes from the current EBAE braille code that occur in UEB will be discussed along with resources to help you learn more. While not intended to be a comprehensive in-service in UEB, this seminar is meant to answer basic questions and serve as a foundation for further learning.

Dean of Educational Programs and Instruction Doug Anzlovar will moderate this 60-minute seminar. A question and answer session will be included as part of the seminar.

After attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

*	describe various tactile codes for reading and writing used by people who are blind or visually impaired throughout history
*	demonstrate understanding of the reasoning for the development of the Unified English Braille code (UEB)
*	identify basic changes adopted in UEB from the current code (English Braille American Edition)

World Glaucoma Week
Did you know that March 8-14 is World Glaucoma Week? The World Glaucoma Association and World Glaucoma Patient Association launched the week to increase global awareness of the disease and how to cope with it.

To educate those who are living with glaucoma and their family members, Hadley offers a course on the disease <http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=10207074&msgid=770612&act=GE9S&c=225701&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hadley.edu%2FShowCourseDetail.asp%3Fcourseid%3DGLA-112> .The information provided in the course helps students take an active role in the rehabilitation process. For more information on the course or to register, please visit www.hadley.edu.

Even if glaucoma does not result in total blindness, it can lead to low vision. According to 2010 research by the National Eye Institute, the number of Americans with low vision will continue to grow dramatically, from 2.9 million in 2010 to 5 million in 2030 to 8.9 million by 2050. In response, Hadley has launched the Low Vision Focus @ Hadley (LVF) <http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=10207074&msgid=770612&act=GE9S&c=225701&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lowvisionfocus.org> , which offers a unique distance learning opportunity for those living with low vision. The LVF offers ways for seniors to educate themselves on their condition as well as learn adaptive techniques to continue the tasks of daily living with the dignity of self-reliance. On April 15, ten new audio lessons as part of the LVF will be made available. The topics range from cooking to managing medications to indoor mobility. Please visit www.lowvisionfocus.org for more information.
