Helen Betty Dean Rogers Capps COLUMBIA - Helen Betty Dean Rogers Capps, 87,
passed away after a long illness at her home in Columbia on December 17,
2018. Born on May 5, 1931 in Marion County, SC, she was a daughter of the
late Bert Rogers and Gertrude Williams Rogers. She graduated from Mullins
High School in 1949 and later Draughon's Business College in Columbia. She
married Donald C. Capps in 1949. Betty was a member of Kilbourne Park
Baptist Church for 65 years. Alongside her husband, she was a dedicated
member of the National Federation of the Blind and worked tirelessly for
over 60 years to improve the lives of blind people. This work included
travel to all 50 states and several foreign countries; including Australia,
Egypt, and Spain. Don and Betty received numerous awards as a result of
their advocacy work for the blind, including the South Carolina Order of the
Palmetto. "Miss Betty" as she was frequently called, was beloved by
thousands of blind people. Prior to having her first child, Betty was
employed with First National Bank and later the South Carolina Department of
Health. Don and Betty had two children, Donald Craig Capps and the late
Helen Elizabeth Capps Holdcraft. In addition to her husband and son, she is
survived by her brother, Eugene F. Rogers; sister, Lucille Rogers;
grandchildren, Aaron Holdcroft, Michael Holdcroft, and Laura Holdcroft
Setters; great-grandchildren, Brooke Holdcraft, Mason Setters, Elizabeth
Setters, Juliet Setters; son-in-law, David Setters; as well as numerous
nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 o'clock,
Thursday, December 20, 2018, at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, 4205
Kilbourne Park Road, Columbia with Reverend Terry Smoak officiating. The
family will receive friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at
1 o'clock in the Annie Green Building . Burial will be held at 2 o'clock
Friday, December 21, 2018, at Red Hill Memorial Gardens, 1932 Old Stage
Road, Mullins, SC 29574. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is
assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, living memorials may be made to
the Federation Center of the Blind, 119 South Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC
