Meet Frances McLaughlin. Art and teaching have always been her passion. While working as a designer and painter, she was diagnosed with glaucoma, which progressed slowly. As her vision deteriorated, she continued to paint, finding that her loss in vision resulted in more free and loose paintings.
Frances is now legally blind, and continues to paint and teach others who are visually impaired to create art. Learn more about Frances and her art online at <http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=10207074&msgid=830471&act=GE9S&c=225701&destination=http%3A%2F%2Ffrancesmclaughlin.com> francesmclaughlin.com.
Frances' submission, “Lavender Field,” oil on canvas, depicts a woman wearing a white dress and yellow hat picking lavender in a vibrant field.

A Letter from Hadley's President...
Dear Members of the Hadley Community,
It has been an action-packed spring here. On May 15th, Douglas Walker, Hadley’s Director of Assistive Technology, was invited to be the featured presenter at Apple’s flagship store in downtown Chicago. As part of Apple’s in-store educational series “Today at Apple,” Douglas addressed an audience of nearly 100 people on how to use three of the most important accessibility features of Apple’s iOS devices. We hope to have Douglas deliver the same presentation at Apple stores in other major markets.
Two days later, on Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Apple announced a partnership with Hadley in conjunction with Apple’s Everyone Can Code initiative. Code is the language of technology and Apple’s philosophy is that coding is an essential skill. As a first step, Apple has requested that Hadley develop a series of instructional videos that introduce learners to their Swift Playground app. We expect these videos to roll out later in the year.
In addition to our continuing partnership with Apple, we are continuing to learn from you, our learners. Through extensive research, we have gained an increased understanding of how best to meet the needs and expectations of our community today and into the future. Some highlights include: more instruction on how to use technology in everyday life; increased opportunities to interact with Hadley staff; more ways to interact with and learn from other learners; and offering personalized learning recommendations.
We have taken all of this learning to heart and are busily working to create a next-generation learning experience we are eager to share with you. Stay tuned!
Sincerely,
Julie S. Tye, President
