Greetings All NFB of SC Family,

As many of you have heard, South Carolina has a high likelihood of Hurricane Florence affecting the entire state. Governor Henry McMaster has declared a State of Emergency. In an effort to ensure all of you remain safe and that the blind and visually impaired community is informed, I wanted to share a few things.

Most of you may not be aware that you can download an accessible application on your phone whether Apple or Android called SC Emergency Manager. This app will inform you of closing s and delays, how to best prepare for an emergency and so much more. This app is accessible and is very easy to use.

Secondly, any of you that is or that knows someone that might have difficulty evacuating can call your local emergency management agency to get on a list so that you can be assisted. You will have to reach out to your local county officials for this information, but I assure you this service is available and not well known about.

I currently serve as the SC Section Emergency Coordinator for the Amateur Radio Relay Ligue’s Amateur Radio Emergency Service. In this role I coordinate with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division to ensure we have auxiliary communications equipment and volunteers to serve in the counties for example shelters and local emergency operation centers. If you have any questions during the disaster that I Might be able to assist with, you may reach out to Nancy or myself. Please note that I may be tied up and it might take some time in getting back with you.

Please find below helpful links to assist you during the possible upcoming emergency.
