Your Rights & Responsibilities

Emergency shelters are ready to receive evacuees before Hurricane Florence arrives. When you head to a shelter, do not forget your medications, equipment, and chargers.

You can find a list of shelters on the <https://able-sc.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c86fb5ede9ea4a8329ed696f6&id=76b46dfdef&e=79a1c95e5b> SC EMD webpage. Remember to keep your cell phone charged and make sure a friend or family member knows where you are staying.

Assistive Technology and Medications

Shelters are not equipped to replace your medications or equipment. Do what you can to bring it with you so that limited quantities of replacement equipment can be used by others. Taking pictures of your prescriptions, cane, walker, wheelchair, or other personal items, including any serial numbers, can help you keep track. Remember to pack chargers for any equipment that runs on a battery. <https://able-sc.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c86fb5ede9ea4a8329ed696f6&id=512abf033f&e=79a1c95e5b> This link has more information about preparing for an emergency if you use assistive technology.

Bring at least two weeks of medication with you to emergency shelters. If you need refills or an emergency supply of your prescription, call your local pharmacy today.

Service Animals:

Under the ADA, emergency shelters must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all public areas. Emergency shelter workers may ask two questions: (1) is the animal a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task has the animal been trained to perform. If you are experiencing issues with your service animal at an emergency shelter, you can use these resources to advocate for your rights:
