Initially, the refrigerator and freezer needed to be replaced and they have
been installed. Since the dish washer and stove in the commercial kitchen
are thirty years old as well, we are now looking at the feasibility of also
upgrading these appliances.

Positive Note 1752
Greetings Fellow Federationists:
Approximately two months ago, we wrote a letter to the Bignon
family Foundation asking for financial assistance to help with replacing or
updating the commercial kitchen equipment in the conference center.
Thursday morning, March 5, Shelley and I along with Carolyn Phillips, a
member of the Columbia Chapter, visited the offices of the Bignon family
Foundation and we were presented with a generous contribution in the amount
of $5,000 to be used for the Rocky Bottom commercial kitchen fund. Shelley
and I are also very thankful to have received $100 each from two of our
church family members at Trinity Baptist Church. This brings our grand
total in cash and pledges to $8,770. Thanks to everyone who has contributed
thus far. I continue to be hopeful there will be others who will contribute
to this worthy project so that we can continue to upgrade our appliances in
the commercial kitchen of the conference center.

You can now begin to make your hotel reservations for the 2020
NFB of SC State Convention which will be held at the North Charleston
Marriott August 21-23. Rates for this year's convention are $115 per night
for singles and doubles, and $125 per night for triples and quads. In
addition to the room rates there will be a tax, which at present is 14
percent plus a 2.18 SC Destination Tourism Fee in effect at the time of
check-out. The deadline to make reservations will be July 30, 2020. There
will also be a limited number of rooms available for the $115 rate Thursday,
August 20, for those individuals wanting to arrive to the hotel a day prior
to the official start of the convention. Please make your reservations by
calling toll free Marriott reservations at 800-228-9290 or you can call the
North Charleston marriott at 843-747-1900. Inform the reservationist you
are reserving a room for the National Federation of the Blind of South
Carolina state convention. Reservations can be made starting immediately.
Be sure to make your reservations as soon as possible, but no
later than Thursday, July 30, 2020. While this is the cut-off date for the
NFB of SC room block, rooms will not last that long. It is strongly
recommended that you immediately make your reservations to be assured of
room accommodations.
The Hotel is obligated to retain the block of rooms reserved by
the NFB of SC until July 30. After that time, reservations will be honored
if there are still available accommodations.
Please be sure to be clear on the type of reservation you
want--one, two, three or four person rooms, etc.--and be sure to specify
that this is for the NFB of SC Convention to get these special rates.
If you pay in advance, your reservation will be guaranteed;
however, you will not have to pay as long as you arrive by 6:00 p.m. Any
amount you pay, of course, will be applied toward your bill. It has been 23
years since the NFB of SC has held a state convention in North Charleston.
I know the Charleston chapter is working very hard to make the 2020 state
convention the best ever. Further information regarding state convention
registration and convention attractions will be forth coming, so stay tuned.
We have an announcement from Shelley Coppel, President of the
NFB of SC Seniors Division. "Happy St. Patrick's Day! I would like to
remind folks that the NFB of SC Senior Division is selling raffle tickets
for a Talking Toaster Oven. Any chapter who would like to sell tickets, or
purchase them may contact Shelley Coppel at 803-796-8662, and I will mail
them to you. The cost for the tickets is as follows: $5 for 1 ticket, or 3
tickets for $10.We will draw for this at our State Convention August 23,
2020. We would appreciate your support!!!!"
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is
not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise
the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want:
blindness is not what holds you back.
Final Thought: Transforming dreams into reality: Make a bucket list of
things you really want to do, no matter how impossible it seems. Later in
life you will be amazed how many you have accomplished!
