Positive Note 1778
Greetings Fellow Federationists:
I hope each of you were able to relax and take time for yourselves during
this past long Labor Day weekend! A small group from Successful Transitions
including two students along with other Federation members and volunteers
spent a few days at Rocky Bottom. We moved furniture and cleaned out the
office next to Linda's office to prepare for a gift shop. The gift shop will
include items that are made by the blind, represent the blind, or that
people who rent Rocky Bottom ask for on a regular basis. If you would like
to contribute items to sell in the shop, please let me know. Do you crochet?
Do you make specialty items? Do you just want to donate items for the shop
that others may wish to purchase, we would love to hear from you!
We are also planning another trip to Rocky Bottom later in September to
organize the gift shop, to label items in print and in Braille, to put items
in zip lock bags. All hands and ideas are welcome on this special project.
Rocky Bottom is yours, Rocky Bottom is ours. Rocky bottom is owned and
operated by the blind of South Carolina. Let's work together to build a gift
shop that we are proud of, and that guests are excited to visit. Come join
us on our next trip!
With "meet the Blind Month" quickly approaching, we would love to know of
events your chapter has planned. Please help us include more statewide
content on our NFB of SC website nfbofsc.org by sending Steve Cook pictures
from your chapter's event(s) with labels of who is in them and a description
of the activity being shown. Though COVID may have changed how we do things
in the NFB of SC, it does not have to change the fact that we still do them!
If you need help learning how to send photos electronically, please get in
touch with Steve at cookcafe at sc.rr.com <mailto:cookcafe at sc.rr.com> or by
calling (803) 254-0222. Thanks for being part of the team that will show the
world how the NFB of SC gets things done
We will resume our South Carolina Connects meeting next
Thursday, September 17 at 5 pm on the Zoom platform and look forward to you
joining us to learn about and share ideas in the NFB of SC affiliate.
Thank you to those divisions and chapters that add your meetings to the
listserv. The following chapters will be meeting over the next few days.
Please let us know if you would like your chapter or division meeting added
to the listserv so others can attend and participate.
At large chapter, Tuesday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m. via zoom.
Columbia chapter meeting, Thursday, September 10 at 6:15 p.m. via zoom.

I will be working on committees for the 2020-2021 year. If you
wish to serve on a committee, please text or call me at 803-960-9977 or
email me at jhipp25 at sc.rr.com <mailto:jhipp25 at sc.rr.com> by Friday,
September 11.
We have a lot of talent in the Palmetto State. Please consider
what committee or committees you would like to work on. Unless it is a
committee giving out an award, or there is a reason not to meet on a regular
basis, suggesting each month, please be active on that committee which goes
along with our NFB pledge as being an active participant in this
organization. Let's find your strengths and add them to our pool in this
state.
I would like these committees to begin meeting in or before
October once members have been added and a final list has been sent out. I
would encourage committee meetings to be the same day each month to
encourage consistency and not overlap with other committee meetings so
members can be a part of more than one committee.
Committees include:
PAC: probably will be combined with SUN and Dream Circle for
the "Doing our Fair Share" committee or some title similar
White Cane Awareness Day/Walk-A-Thon Committee: probably will
be changed to meet the blind month committee
Public Relations
Social Media
Employer of the Year Award
Educator of the Year Award
Donald C Capps Award
Braille Literacy
Membership
Scholarship
Finance
Legislative
Resolutions
SUN: probably will be combined with PAC and Dream Circle for
the "Doing our Fair Share" committee or some title similar
Fund Raising
Diversity and Inclusion (new)
Diabetes Action Network (new)

We have a lot taking place in our affiliate and through the national office.
The NFB of SC is a part of a larger movement. Let's go build the Federation,
invite others to join our family, and welcome new members!
Final Thought: "'Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there
is no path and leave a trail." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
NFB Pledge
I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of
the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to
support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.
NFB One Minute Message
"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back."
If this message was forwarded to you and you would like to receive it
